According to contemporary estimates, as much as a quarter of German industry was already occupied in 1935 with ‘non-marketed production’ of various kinds.87 And in 1934 the consequences of this dramatic restructuring of the German economy were to make themselves felt in the first real crisis of the Nazi regime.
