I would guess that the Lapita potters were the interisland traders of the New Guinea region in the centuries after 1600 B.C.

Does not answer the question of why Lapita pottery is confined to the islets and is relatively scarce in Mew Guinea. In fact, it raises the question of why traders' goods which were accepted on the coast for barter, weren't sent further upland?
