“Never think that you are not enough,” Hamish growled, his grip on me tightening, and he took my jaw in his hand, locking his gaze with mine as he seemed to peer directly into my soul. “You fought with all you had, unflinchingly and without fear, giving yourself entirely to a fight that could have righted the world. You fought for love and justice, and you should have won. I am endlessly proud of you, dear boy. Endlessly, utterly proud of the man you proved yourself to be.”
“You can do this. You were born to wear the crown, and you can bear the weight of it no matter how heavy it becomes,” I swore to her.
“Defy the stars,” I said fiercely, willing her to do so with all I was and all I had.
“When one falls to the dark, the other shall be their guiding light,” Merissa murmured with a frown, those words familiar to me.
She has sworn to defy destiny in the matter of my death, and I have sworn to do all I can to defy it too. So will you help me, or would you rather allow your distaste for me to leave her grieving and alone for the rest of her life?” I demanded. Hail sighed heavily. “I preferred the blonde one,” he grunted.
“See?” I said. “I’m forever drawn to the dark.” “Some would say that makes it more impressive when you continue to find the light.”
“But you need someone on the other side to figure that out for you. There is a place within the Library of the Lost where such knowledge is hidden, deep beneath the earth, rock and water secreting it away from the greedy eyes of the stars, guarded by those who cherish that knowledge above all else. Seek it, claim it, use it.”
“Nothing that involves you, relic,” Darius said, striding into my chambers as if he owned them.
“Nothing that involves you, poor choice,” I said in the exact same tone he’d used on me.
Marcel whipped me in the fucking face again with his wing as he ran after him, and I hurried to keep up. “Marcel,” I snapped. “Yes?” he called innocently. “Do that again and I’ll rip your wings off and shove them up your ass.”
“The dead don’t get to keep possession of any treasures, fool,” Hail muttered, and Darius growled like a feral beast. “Bullshit. That crystal is mine and the rest of my treasure is mine too and I’ll be back to claim it before any other fucker can lay their hands on it,” Darius snapped.
