Colwell, “Miracles and History,” 12, asks on what basis Hume forms this opinion, since he presents no historical evidence to substantiate it. Colwell cites our own culture as a counterexample to Hume’s claim. Others observe that Hume also readily dismissed claims from his own era (the Jansenists), further demonstrating the ad hominem character of his claim (Beckwith, Argument, 53).
