“What’s the matter with you?” God, this is impossible. I point to my mouth and shake my head. “Oh, you’re a mute?” I nod. “Probably for the best. I don’t need any more lies from a man. Had enough of that.”
“What’s it like to have the self-confidence of a man at least twice as intelligent and good looking as you? Seems like it would be jarring.”
“By the time we’re through with this trip, you’ll understand there’s no amount of wickedness I wouldn’t do for you.”
“Just tell me what you want, Charlie. Tell me and I’ll burn down heaven and earth to give it to you.”
“Don’t go insulting other men. I’ll get jealous.”
I hold her close, listening as she falls asleep in my arms. I may not be whole, but in this moment, I know I will be. I have to be.
“I don’t know what you just called me, but I’m certain I’ve maimed people for less.” I glare back at him.
