He attaches a picture of his desk, which has the same photo on it. I press my lips together so I don’t squeal like an overly excited teenager. But this makes me feel like we’re a real couple. Like we could be a true family.

“Only the people who are close enough to stick a knife in your back can betray you.”

I pull my hand out of his and take five long steps back. There is black writing over his heart that wasn’t there before. It reads: EXCLUSIVE PROPERTY OF LUCIENNE PEERY TRESPASSERS WILL BE REMOVED WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE

He laughs. “It’s a tattoo.” “Oh my God. When did you get this?” “The day you served me with the divorce papers.” Shock slackens my jaw. “Are you insane?”
