‘And then,’ I continued bitterly, ‘I’ll get to spend the next months or years, or however bloody long it takes, watching the love in his eyes turn to disgust. It’ll be a slow death rather than a quick one. He deserves better than that.’ I sniffed. ‘So do I. So it has to be this way.’
‘I love you, Emma.’ I squeezed my eyes shut and pressed the button to end the call. Only then did I whisper back, ‘I love you too.’
I always knew he was waiting for his alma gemela. I am happy that he found you.’
‘D’Artagnan,’ he drawled, ‘there’s nothing you could do that would make me hate you. Ever.’ ‘You say that now but—’ ‘Ever,’ he repeated.
‘I’m a bloodsucker, Emma.’ I squinted. ‘So?’ ‘You don’t like vampires.’ I started. Where did that come from? ‘What? That’s not true.’ ‘Let me rephrase that. You don’t like that we have to drink blood in order to survive. And you don’t like that we’re naturally more attractive in order to persuade humans to give us that blood.’
‘I will never hate you. I might not like everything that you do, but that doesn’t mean that my feelings for you will change, Emma Bellamy. They certainly won’t change because of something outwith your control. I will always have your back. I will always love you. We belong together. You know it as well as I do.’
‘A baby?’ I nodded. He leapt off the sofa and pulled me into his arms. ‘A baby,’ he breathed. ‘We’re going to be a family.’ I pressed against him and, because I knew it was true, I said, ‘We’re already a family.’ Lukas crowed with joy and then he kissed me until every other thought fled my mind. Everything was going to be alright. We were going to get a happy ending.
‘I’m a vampire,’ he said finally. ‘Instead of money, I promise not to bleed you dry. She’s a werewolf and she promises not to eat you. And this one here,’ he nudged me, ‘is a police detective who’s been suspended on suspicion of murder. She promises not to kill you.’
DSI Barnes looked at me. ‘Sooner or later you are going to have to decide if you’re a supe or if you’re a detective.’ I met her eyes. ‘Until now, I’d always thought I was both,’ I answered quietly.
Lukas, in particular, was doing an excellent job of yelling epithets at Buffy while she was responding with energetic insults. I wondered if they were completely faking their mutual antagonism. Probably not.
