“You saw me back there,” she stated evenly, green eyes snaring me. “I did.” “You kept walking.” I nodded like a fool. “I did.” “Don’t do that again.” Fuck me. “I won’t.”
“You are,” she said before leaving the room. “In every way.”
And with those words, my mother cut me deeper and more viciously than my father ever had.
“And just so you know, Joe?” She leaned in close and pressed a kiss to my cheek. “You’re
my favorite friend, with my favorite everything.”
“Holy shit.”
Did that just happen?
“How’d you get here, Molloy?” “I used these remarkable new inventions called feet.” “Funny,” I deadpanned. “How are you getting home?” “Believe it or not, the same remarkable inventions can be used to go in two directions.”
“Because the only time that I allow myself to feel anything is when I’m with you.”
“And who knows? Maybe in time, you’ll be coaxed out of that pretty little shell, and we can be friends.” “You want to be my friend?” “Is that okay with you?” “Yes.” She nodded uncertainly. “Please.” My heart cracked in my chest. She was so small. So vulnerable. So broken. “Then it’s official.” I gave her a reassuring hug as I walked her down the corridor to class, making sure that every catty bitch in this school got a good look at us. “We’re friends.”
