I expect her to scream for help or try to swim away. Instead, the princess punches me right in the face.
“My oh my. Listen to the mouth on this bit of fluff. Is that how you talk over in Copenhagen, or have you been on a boat too long? You sound like a bloody sailor.”
“These are real books. Ones that tell stories, not just someone’s boring lineage.”
“And you think the lot of us are illiterate imbeciles?”
“You can drop the sword now, luv,” he says softly. “It won’t do you any good. I’m not going to let you get away, no matter how much you beg. And believe me, I would love to hear you beg.”
“Actually, to me, you’re a half-masted arse with a boot for a face,”
“You aren’t to lay a hand on the princess,” he says in a low, steady voice, words brimming with menace. “I know you figure that’s your right as the husband, but you have no rights to anything anymore and especially not to her. She’s my property now, as are you, and if I catch you leaving a mark on my property again, I’ll eat your balls for breakfast. Savvy?”
Jaymie and 1 other person liked this
“You say ravishing as if it’s a bad thing,” I whisper, my voice thick. “Apparently you’ve never been ravished properly before.”
“Did you really think you’d have any chance of escape?”
“Not really,” I admit. “I just wanted to punch you again.”
“I couldn’t hate you more,”
“Good to know there’s a threshold,”
There are no good men, sister. But there are no good Syrens either. We are all just trying to survive.
“Darling, your body would bring any man to their knees where they would be in the right position to worship you. It’s a body carved by god yet meant for sin, and it would become anyone’s salvation.”
“I fear many things, luv. And from the start, I have always feared you.”
“Christ, woman,” I swear gruffly. “You could drown a man.”
“Being a saint is so fucking boring.”
“My little monster has come out to play again,” I say, grinning up at her. “Don’t you know this only excites me?”
“So could I,” I counter. “Only I’d make it worth your while.”
“I’ve never had an addiction before,” he says hoarsely. “But I think you’ll be mine.”
“There are no mistakes. Just choices that took us on a different path.”
“But we can be mad together. We can drown in our madness together.”
“Like you’re the moon and I’m the tides, and every thought, every need, every want, is drawn to you, Maren.” I laugh to myself. “You’re right, this is madness and I’m drowning and I don’t give a damn.”
“No, you aren’t going to live through this one, mate. The lady you just tried to take, my lady, had been kind enough to consider marooning you. You won’t be marooned now. Now you’re going to eat your own cock before I chop your head off. The taste of your own shortcomings is the last thing you’ll know.”
