I just watched and thought it a shame that he died dancing but without his dancing shoes.
“Rather a drink be my master than a man. These chains taste sweet.”
“Break the chains, my love.”
“In the densest places of man, humanity most easily breaks down,” he says.
I’m a sheep wearing wolves’ clothing in a pack of wolves.
“The Golden stock …,” Mustang murmurs. “How can you be so cold?” “Little girl,” Antonia sighs, “Gold is a cold metal.”
There is goodness in Golds, because in many ways, they are the best humanity can offer. But they’re also the worst. What does that do to her dream? Only time will tell.
Words are a weapon stronger than he knows. And songs are even greater. The words wake the mind. The melody wakes the heart. I come from a people of song and dance. I don’t need him to tell me the power of words.
For seven hundred years, my people have been enslaved without voice, without hope. Now I am their sword. And I do not forgive. I do not forget.
Suddenly I realize it wasn’t debris I felt against my escape pod as I left the ship. It was people. My crew. Hundreds of lowColors spilled into space.
I was not good enough to be a husband. Not good enough that my wife would let me be a father. Not good enough to be a Gold.
“Feels good. That’s how I know it’s right, Reap. Despite all this shit. It feels good in here.” He taps his thin chest. “It feels … how do you say … bloodydamn good.”
It should not be this way. The Golds have everything, yet they demand sacrifices even from their own. This place is sick. This empire broken. It eats its kings, its queens, as hungrily as it does the paupers who mill its earth. But it cannot have this woman as it had the girl I buried. I will not let it devour her. I will not let it devour my family in Lykos. I will break it, even if it claims me in the end.
Augustus lets slip the smallest, barest of smiles, a twin to the first. His love is the most conditional I’ve ever seen. How quickly he can call his daughter a whore, then smile as she reclaims what power she lost in the room. Suddenly, she matters.
“History is written by the victors.”
“In another life, you would have been one of my sons, Darrow. I would have found you earlier, before whatever happened that filled you with this rage. I would not have raised you to be a great man. There is no peace for great men. I would have had you be a decent one. I would have given you the quiet strength to grow old with the woman you love. Now all I can give you is a chance.
“I’m just …” I snicker quietly. “I’m trying to imagine the great ArchGovernor Augustus having nightmares of robots.” A louder bout of laughter seizes me. “Does he suppose they’d want more oil? More vacation time?”
To be an Obsidian is to know misery. To be a Stained is to be misery.
“What if I wanted you to be free?” He flinches back. Eyes expressing a deep fear. “Freedom drowns.” “Then learn to swim.”
“Power is the crown that eats the head,”
All I see behind my eyelids is a world of war. There is no other future for me, for us. Yet how many times have I already been pieced back together? How much longer can all these stitches hold? In the end, will there even be pieces left of me?
“The dead can always hear us, my love. Why else do you think we sing? We want them to know that even though they are gone, we can still find joy.” Cradling my niece, she turns to look at me as she takes the first step up the stairs. “That’s all they’d want for us.”
“That woman would look much better with a gun in her mouth,” Victra mutters,
I know death well enough to hear it gather its breath.
Though death might come for us. I am home in this weird screaming mass of humanity. And as we pretend to be brave, we become so.
I’ve heard the Rim is different. They do not kill children here. But everyone likes to pretend that they don’t kill children.
Fear is not real. If you’re watching, Eo, it’s time to close your eyes. The Reaper has come. And he’s brought hell with him.
“I’m going to kill you, Aja! I’m going to kill you in your face!”
“My people have a legend of a being who stands astride the road leading to the world after. He will judge the wicked from the good. His name is the Reaper. I am not him. I’m just a man. But soon you will meet him. Soon he will judge you for all the sins you hold.”
