“Raven,” he yelled from behind me. “There’s nowhere you can run that I will not find you. I will chase you all over this world if I have to.”
“I've never known you to do anything lightly. You wreck worlds with mere thoughts and call down goddesses with sheer intention. You're unlike anything this world has ever known.”
He was fire, but I was, too, and I craved the burn.
“Anyone that casts a spell toward you is my enemy. Anyone that has a single cruel thought about you is my enemy. Anyone that stands between you and whatever it is you want in this world is my enemy.”
“Let me show you what being a victim fucking looks like.”
“The chance was always there, waiting for you to get the nerve to take it. I thought about that a lot after… you died. How losing you wasn’t like losing someone I’d just fallen for. I’d been falling, inch by inch, my whole life.”
“This is supposed to be a training lesson,” he rumbled into my ear. “Then why are you getting your ass kicked?” “Because, Little Witch, you are a delicious distraction.”
“The most important part of a relationship with a shifter is embracing all versions of him.”
I took a deep breath, reminding myself that this beautiful face belonged to Bastian, too. Grey was mine, as much as the king.
Something within this moment felt wrong but wholly right. He’d done such an exquisite job convincing me of his relation to the king, a deep dark part of my soul felt like I was betraying Bastian for feeling so attracted and tempted by Grey.
I didn’t blink, didn’t breathe, as he fell beside me. I studied the look on his face seconds after euphoria. He was everything. Darkness and light. Eternity and never. Grey and Bastian. He was the beginning and the end and all the space in-between. The moon’s kiss and the sun’s heat. He was fire, and he was mine.
“You are my only weakness,” he breathed into my ear. “My only equal. My only future. A year ago, I would have given my life to keep this world from burning. And now, I’d sooner light the world on fire and watch it burn than see you suffer its wrath. You’ve changed everything. I think I’ve fallen in love with you, Little Witch. In fact, I don’t think I’ll ever stop falling.”
“If you die, I’ll shred this world to pieces. I’ll burn it. I’ll dig a fucking grave and send it straight to hell.”
“If I could take this moment and live in it forever, I would,” he said, quietly. “I’ve never known anything to be so unbreakable and so fragile at the same time. I think I will need you every second of every minute for the rest of forever and then five minutes more.”
“Every second of every minute for the rest of forever is already yours. You can have all the minutes beyond that. In every space of time, in every world, my love, I am yours. Forever.”
I don’t think love is ever supposed to be easy. The work you put into it is what makes it so special.
Like beauty, villainy was in the eye of the beholder.
I wondered if we’d find that place of power. The hidden pedestal Bastian’s mother had used to bind me to those books. I had a feeling I knew where it was and maybe he did too. I couldn’t ask him, though. Not now, while the world was still his enemy, and me, the reason for his heartache.
He looked down at me with the tenderest smile before gesturing up to the figure of a woman in a beautiful ball gown, her eyes closed, holding her arms wide as if conducting the world in a song of life and sorrow. Tangles of wild curls fell down her shoulders. The lace details of her dress, perfection. “Me?”
“Every second of every minute for the rest of forever, and then five minutes more.”
It was all a lie. A goddamn lie. She’d never blessed me. No one blessed by the goddess would be damned to watch every person they loved in the world die because they’d tried to save you.
The wild heart of the beast beat within me as I shifted to a beautiful black panther and ran. I could feel his heart. Could wrap my mind around his essence and finally embrace my familiar once more. My Scoop.
“It’s the final page from the Book of Omnia crumpled and locked inside.” My heart stopped, the tingling sensation in my nose stirring tears. “You didn’t.” “Cast, my love.”
