But as he opened his eyes and met the gaze of the queen, his judge, something shifted. It was strange. As if something inside of him fixed itself, something he didn’t know was broken.
Cade wasn’t vain enough to think that she was avoiding him in particular, but it had been days since he’d seen her face and he didn’t like it.
It was just a name, a word. But on his lips, they were like a siren’s call when they should have been cause for punishment.
“I have no fucking idea,” he told her with an amused grin before his hand came up and gripped the back of her neck and his lips collided with hers.
“Your Majesty, are you okay?” “She’s obviously not fucking okay.” Cade glared right back at him.
His face was straight, eyes were hard. “Deianira, you scared the shit out of me that day. You might not think that it’s a big deal, but I was the one carrying your body to the infirmary, and if I have to see you like that again, Mikhael’s gonna need an extra bed for me.” He stepped forward. “So, I’ll ask you every five minutes if it means I’ll be better prepared to help you.”
She slapped her hands over her mouth with a loud snort as she shook her head. Cade tried to get back to his feet but found himself on his knees again. It really did hurt, but he would throw himself off the top floor of the palace if it meant that she would keep making that sound.
The little growl that Deianira let out would've been cute had she not shoved at his chest while using her ankle to drag his knee from beneath him. Cade nearly yelped as his back collided with the bed. Damn.
“DEIANIRA, I LOVE YOU!” he bellowed. Her blood stilled. “I came to this stupid ball and borrowed your scary uncle’s suit FOR YOU! I dragged myself out of bed at three in the morning every day so you could kick my ass, just to spend time WITH YOU! I am here, right now, because I LOVE YOU!” Every word was laced with hurt.
He wanted to hate her. He really did, but every cell in his body was so ridiculously in love with her. There was no easing the vice grip that she had on his heart.
“Salem, I swear to the Gods, if you hurt him, I’ll kill you!” she growled with tears streaming down her face. She’s protecting me-
“When I realized who you were, I was convinced I was being punished. That the Gods wanted me to suffer for my sins. But you weren’t a punishment.” she breathed, shaking her head. “You saved me.”
“Patriam,” he started with his head down. “It’s where we’re really from. These Gods that we learned about in school, The God of Magic, God of Foresight,” he said, turning to Lia, “God of Empathy,” to Cade, “God of Psionicism,” to Salem, “and the Angel of Death.” His gaze landed on Deianira.
“The primas in the resistance wanted a fresh start. They wanted to integrate with humans but the actions of the primas in Patriam were so barbaric, it was bound to create problems, prejudices. So the resistance banned people in Terra from speaking about it. It was practically erased from history.”
