Wie Moshfegh’s gitzwarte universum al heeft bezocht in haar twee romans, weet: zelfs tongue in cheek kan zij bijten. Heimwee naar een andere wereld bundelt kortverhalen rond ietwat onaangename personages, vaak eenlingen. Het ene verhaal lag me meer dan het andere - waardoor het lezen van de bundel bijna twintig dagen in beslag nam. Vaker dan me lief was legde ik het boek weg, omdat ik geen zin had in weer een deprimerend of sombere kennismaking met een vreemde figuur. Toch vond ik ook hele mooie / grappige verhalen terug in het boek, namelijk: 'M'n leven beteren' en 'Malibu', 'Geen plek voor nette mensen'.

Bijna 5*, als de laatste drie verhalen niet zo uit de toon waren gevallen
'Heimwee naar een andere wereld' is een moderne sprookjesbundel gevuld met vreemde creaturen. Omdat we ons in Amerika bevinden zouden het in mijn fantasie outcasts of kiezers van Trump kunnen zijn, anderzijds zie ik ook elfen en rare jonge en oude mensen. Twin Peaks lijkt nooit veraf.
