Start your review of Neither Here nor There: Travels in Europe
In zijn onnavolgbare stijl vertelt Bill Bryson over zijn reis doorheen Europa in 1990, nog voor de oorlog in (ex-)Joegoslavië en een jaar nadat ik zelf doorheen Italië reisde in het zesde middelbaar. Intussen ben ik zelf in een klein deeltje van de beschreven plaatsen geweest en de herkenning maakt dit boek nog amusanter dan de humor al deed...
Een Amerikaanse brit ontdekt Europa en een Europese Belg wil op reis. Prachtig verhaald en perfect leesvoer om vanuit de lockdown toch op reis te kunnen gaan!
Het gebruikelijke recept: eerste helft vrolijk en hilarisch, tweede helft zeurderig en traag. Het geneest me nog niet van Bryson, maar het was wel minder dan z'n andere reisboeken. Wel grappig om zo Europa door ogen van begin jaren negentig te zien. Had gehoopt dat Katz een prominentere rol zou spelen zoals in A Walk in the Woods.

Een echte Bill Bryson! Verslag van zijn tocht door Europa met rake typeringen van de verschillende landen met hun bewoners, vaak zeer herkenbaar!, gelardeerd met de gebruikelijke ongemakken die horen bij het reizen. Vermakelijke verwondering wordt afgewisseld met oprechte verontwaardiging. Met plezier gelezen.
In a Sunburned Country, Brysons boek over zijn omzwervingen door Australië, vind ik prachtig. Maar dit boek valt me tegen. Het anekdote over brood bestellen in Frankrijk is hilarisch, maar verder vind ik zijn kijk op Europa oppervlakkig en niet erg grappig. Geen aanrader.
Het boek over Engeland beviel mij iets meer, omdat als je zo veel landen bezoekt, je een minder goede indruk krijgt van de sfeer en mentaliteit van een land. Nadelig is ook, dat Bryson uitsluitend grote steden bezoekt en geen provinciestadjes. Maar geestig is hij als steeds.

He lived for many years with his English wife and four children in North Yorkshire.
