message 34: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Awww.... I'm sad WOT is on there. I personally enjoyed the development RJ did with the characters and plot. Certainly, things slowed down, but it got a lot more complex and the complexity really makes it interesting.

message 33: by Huiying (new)

Huiying I thought some of the sequels to Ender's Game were good too! Certainly not as fun to read as the first but I think there were a good many worthy ideas in them... in particular Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide.

message 32: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock The Ender's Game sequels were different, but good in their own sense, agreed.

message 31: by Mariah (new)

Mariah I liked the 1st and 2nd book of His Dark Materials
but the 3rd not as much. It seemed to philosophically heavy-handed esp. for a children's book!

message 30: by Adam (new)

Adam Ender's Game sequels = BAD?!

Oh. My. God.

If anything they were BETTER than the first novel!! More deep, more encompassing... just... better...

message 29: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock The sequel and the original were completely different from one another... I don't compare them. I both think they're fun. But yes, definitely more deep.

message 28: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis I second Adam's comment; the Ender Saga should not be on there.

Twilight, however, deserves exactly what it got.

And, Z, as far as I've read in WOT I'm on your side; I liked the second and third much more than the first. Eye of the World was too much exposition and not enough action.

message 27: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Whenever I speak to people about the Ender Saga, particularly the first installment, I see a wide division between those who adore the book and those who hate it. Common complaints I have heard of it is Ender's callousness and Card's unnecessary comments that can be taken in sexual reference, or the like.

I have not read Twilight, yet as you know, I plan to in order to make fun of the series. Uh-oh, are we going to have Twilight fans attacking us now?

WOT only gets more complex. Books two and three are children's books compared to what follows. The first one has action, but it is all a set-up for the last sentence of the book. And I am so excited to read the twelfth book! (that will not be for a while, unfortunately, for all I own it).

message 26: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis Can be taken in WHAT? I've NEVER heard that.
And of course Ender's callous. They took him from his home at age six and basically taught him to kill. That's part of the reason I prefer Speaker to EG, though both are amazing- in Speaker he's softened a bit, and is much more of a rounded character.

Possibly. They do tend to congregate like unto locusts on a field of grain when someone attacks their gospel. :D

The ending of the first one was SO DARN OBVIOUS. Just saying.

message 25: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock I'll let you read the reviews for yourself rather than elaborate myself on that one.
I know he's callous, and that's why I like the book.
Speaker, would not call him rounder, but I do agree with the softened - trials, experiences, blah, blah, blah, I am just stating what we both know.

You're asking for it. ;)

I read it when I was what, a sevvie? Less obvious then, but of course it is, and I've no problems with that. It gets more surprising later on... rotfl Mat and Tuon is predictable, but HILARIOUS!!!!

message 24: by Arya (new)

Arya Ok - don't attack me - but what is WOT?

message 23: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

message 22: by Mariah (new)

Mariah I couldn't even get thru the first Wheel of Time book!
Total Tolkien rip-off, with flat characters.

message 21: by King Haddock (last edited Dec 02, 2009 02:25PM) (new)

King Haddock True, WOT does take a bit of attention span, but I haven't read a better fantasy series, especially in concern of successful complexity of plot and unique characterization. If you've only read half the first WOT book, you would not realize the depth Jordan delves into the characters, and changing some of them in manners unprecedented in literature, at least in what I have read. I realize the series is not for everyone, but for those who have the time and attention to read these, I would recommend them wholeheartedly to them.

message 20: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Dec 02, 2009 07:36AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Uh, is the series actually finished now?

(Nothing I hate more than starting one that's unfinished as the author died first.)

message 19: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock No. The twelfth book is published and there are two more to go. I have not read the twelfth book yet, but I hear that a bit of it was written by Jordan himself, as well as that he left behind many detailed notes and taped recordings of himself narrating the story, so as to give Sanderson firm framework for finishing the series. It is tragic Jordan never had the chance to finish the WOT (I do not mean to sound melodramatic; I enjoy writing myself, and could not imagine leaving the work unfinished), and the last books probably will not be the same... but I have heard good things from some people who have read the twelfth book. I am being optimistic at present about the final books written by a different author, but who knows? At the very least, I get to know what HAPPENS and still appreciate Jordan's conclusion, even if it is not written in the manner he would have were he alive.

message 18: by Arya (new)

Arya Oh that is sooo sad! How did he die?

message 17: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Can't say I know right off the top of my head what it was, except that he had been struggling with it for quite a while. Something to do with his heart? I think.

message 16: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis Maybe he tried picking up all of his books at once and they squashed him.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but those things are E-freaking-NORMOUS.

message 15: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock I love long books. :)

message 14: by Arya (new)

Arya Hahaha . . . funny Anila!

message 13: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Anila always is funny. But also a hypocrite... you know you like good long books, too!

message 12: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis Depends on the book.
But, in general, you're right- I like good long books. And only good ones. But even those I'll complain about. (Have I not mentioned to you the terrifyingly enormous Cyteen? It's in the same universe as Signy Mallory, who you know is one of my favorite characters of all time...and yet I promise, when I start it, I'll be whining about how LONG it is the whole time.)

message 11: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock Hence why I said the word "good," of course! You ought know by now how meticulously precise I can be when stating things...

message 10: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis You and your high diction. :D

message 9: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock You consider that high diction? :P

message 8: by Kogiopsis (new)

Kogiopsis Not necessarily, but I like making fun of you.

message 7: by Arya (new)

Arya Anila,

Do you know when Brightly Woven comes out?

message 6: by King Haddock (new)

King Haddock I noticed you like making fun of me. XD Not like you don't speak in high diction either...

message 5: by Meha (new)

Meha New moon was okay.

message 4: by Swathika (new)

Swathika Manu I would agree on twilight, but im not so sure about hunger games

message 3: by Vayl (new)

Vayl No! Inkheart should not be on here!

message 2: by Lydia (new)

Lydia Selden a series of Unfortunate Events should not be up there!

message 1: by [deleted user] (new)

Adam wrote: "Ender's Game sequels = BAD?!

AGREED.
