AH I wonder how many spam votes you'll get on this list.

message 2: by D.G. (new)

D.G. LOL, I know.

I get the feeling that it hasn't been rolled out and I'm one of the "testers" because I have seen very few people mention it.

message 3: by AH (new)

AH I just voted on annoying books I see in the sidebar that I have absolutely no intention of reading.

I don't think it's rolled out to all yet, but it's certainly being complained about on the GR Feedback forum!

message 5: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I should probably go there and complain too!

message 6: by Tracey (new)

Tracey I don't intend this to start an argument, but I honestly want to know: do the authors have anything to do with the way their books are advertised? If not, it seems a little hard on them to boycott their books. I absolutely agree with never buying through links, of course, and I absolutely hate the advertising on GR, but...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I don't know, Tracey. That's a really good question, though.

D.G. Tracey wrote: "I don't intend this to start an argument, but I honestly want to know: do the authors have anything to do with the way their books are advertised? If not, it seems a little hard on them to boycott ..."

It's a personal decision that everybody has to make - personally, I'm fine with it. I feel that if you don't tell GR that you don't want some of the stuff they're doing, they'll wallpaper the site with ads.

In general, I don't even like to get recommendations from friends when I haven't asked about them so having GR putting something on my feed that I cannot get rid of is really upsetting.

message 9: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I finally got one, but I looked away and it disappeared. It was Far From the Madding Crowd - but I don't know which author :(

message 10: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Ha, it came back and it was the Thomas Hardy version. I loathe Thomas Hardy, having been made to read Tess in school. So, so, never, never, ever gonna read it!!

D.G. Sandra wrote: "Ha, it came back and it was the Thomas Hardy version. I loathe Thomas Hardy, having been made to read Tess in school. So, so, never, never, ever gonna read it!!"

I just got that one now. I don't know what they're thinking.

Right now they are testing the recommendations with lots of popular books. Can you imagine all the nonsense we'll get when they start selling ads to new stuff?

message 12: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Popular books? Ha. So far 2 authors I've given 1 & 2 stars to and the others I've never heard of.

They obviously aren't running any algorithms or they wouldn't have recc'd authors I don't like.

message 13: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I should have said "popular authors". A lot of the authors I know, even if I'm not into them.

message 14: by AH (new)

AH My take on this list is that I see advertisements for books that would never interest me. I don't read the Oprah best seller list books and those are the books that are usually on these ads.

message 15: by Sandra (new)

Sandra We don't see much of Oprah anymore now that her show has finished. I don't buy magazines, and I never think to look her up on the net.

But I remember thinking, when her show was on, that I'd never read any book she promoted. Not my cup of tea at all.

@ D.G. only 2 of the 4 authors I'd heard of, so popular as always is a matter of $.

message 16: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I'm now looking forward to the crap they are trying to sell, so I can add it to your List D.G. It's like a game :D

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Got my first "sponsored ad" today, so on this list it goes.

message 18: by D.G. (new)

D.G. They're doing it to more and more people!

message 19: by Duane (new)

Duane I was wondering how the books of Flaubert and Hardy got on this list. The are part of the public domain and are in every decent library in the world.

D.G. Duane wrote: "I was wondering how the books of Flaubert and Hardy got on this list. The are part of the public domain and are in every decent library in the world."

All the books on this list have shown up as "sponsored books" in somebody's feed. Hardy's showed up on mine and a few others.

Ok. I understand that. But these great books should be beyond the prejudice of some modern day commercial promotion. Maybe I'm just missing the whole point. Thanks for your response.

message 22: by Sandra (new)

Sandra My guess is the publisher wants to sell more books. So they are sponsored. Regardless of public domain & libraries.

message 23: by Duane (new)

Duane Sandra wrote: "My guess is the publisher wants to sell more books. So they are sponsored. Regardless of public domain & libraries."

I expect you are right Sandra. And so is every other publisher and bookseller in the literature business. That can't be the reason to bán a book from your reading list, there would be nothing left to read. This has to be something specific to Goodreads and Amazon, and that's the part I don't understand. They are in the business to promote and sell books, respectively, so I'm not surprised when they do it. I choose to ignnore their suggestions unless it's a book I'm interested in. Thanks for your response.

message 24: by Emma Sea (new)

Emma Sea Great idea, thank you for creating this list, D.G.

message 25: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I've noticed that when a friend, or a friend of friend posts a review with a nice large gif, I don't get sponsored books. I wonder if that's just a coincidence or if its a thing?

message 26: by Emma Sea (last edited Apr 23, 2015 05:29PM) (new)

Emma Sea sooo . . . gifs to sponsored book posts are as garlic to vampires?

message 27: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I'm hoping so, only time will tell :DDD

message 28: by AH (new)

AH Emma Sea wrote: "sooo . . . gifs to sponsored book posts are as garlic to vampires?"

Love it.

I don't get that many of the sponsored ads, either.

D.G. Duane wrote: "That can't be the reason to bán a book from your reading list, there would be nothing left to read. This has to be something specific to Goodreads and Amazon, and that's the part I don't understand."

I'm just banning any books that shows up on my feed because it bothers the hell out of me - it's a decision I'm making for MYSELF, doesn't mean anybody has to follow suit. As for finding books to read, I'm able to find plenty on my own, no need for GR to try to spoon feed me books I don't want.

message 30: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Emma Sea wrote: "Great idea, thank you for creating this list, D.G."

You're welcome, Emma. I thought it was better than creating a "no way in hell, GR" shelf because I'm sure that's what they want you to do...add the book to your shelves!

message 31: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I agree, that's why I jumped on board with your list D.G. A small rebellion, but worthwhile :D

message 32: by AH (new)

AH Sandra wrote: "I agree, that's why I jumped on board with your list D.G. A small rebellion, but worthwhile :D"

Agreed.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I'm just listing the sponsored books in my feed that I have no interest in. (Given GR's past record with me and their recommendations engine, I'm expecting a mismatch.)

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah If you click on the little gear icon at the top right of your feed and uncheck "recommendations from Goodreads" that should stop them from appearing, I think. You can also uncheck "editorial content from Goodreads," but I'm not sure what that covers.

message 35: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Sarah wrote: "If you click on the little gear icon at the top right of your feed and uncheck "recommendations from Goodreads" that should stop them from appearing, I think. You can also uncheck "editorial conten..."

Mine has 'recommendations' unchecked and they still show up. Let me see if I remove 'editorial' content and see if that does it.

Thanks Sarah!

message 36: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I've always had recommendations unchecked, it didn't stop the sponsored books.

I removed editorial yesterday but I haven't been on long enough since, to say whether that works or not yet.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I have editorial unchecked (always have), and am getting GR's recommendations.

message 38: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I unchecked it yesterday but I'm still getting them too. :(

message 39: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I haven't had one since I unchecked editorial but that may be a coincidence.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Well, now I'm getting repeat sponsored spam, so I'm moving books up the list by how often they get spammed to me.

message 41: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Suddenly there are no sponsored books in my feed - BUT I now get listopia promotions. Why do they keep prodding us?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I'm getting sponsored spam, but not Listopias. Perhaps I've voted on so many they don't know which to suggest to me?

I wish they'd stop this sponsored crap.

message 43: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Spoke too soon - just been bombed with Landline.

I wish they'd stop this sponsored crap

So long as there are those out there adding these sponsored books, this is not going to go away.

message 44: by Ben (last edited May 18, 2015 11:47AM) (new)

Ben Madame Bovary and Memoirs of a Geisha are sponsored books? Really?

message 45: by Beth (new)

Beth Roberts Ben wrote: "Madame Bovary and Memoirs of a Geisha are sponsored books? Really?"

I guess stuff like that doesn't bother me. I've actually found several books via Goodreads recs. If Goodreads bothers you that much, why visit? I like the site. Why make a list and tell Goodreads "enough is enough"? It's there site, it's a free service they provide. No one has to participate or respond. Why be snarky?

message 46: by Beth (new)

Beth Roberts Don't know how that got directed to Ben, it was supposed to be its own post. I mean no ill will towards Ben! Blame my phone and typing while walking!

message 47: by D.G. (last edited May 26, 2015 12:31PM) (new)

Good for you that it doesn't bother you but these spam recommendations bothers me and all the other people who have voted and liked the list. You should take your own advice - you don't have to vote for anything on this list if you don't like it.

And GR isn't free considering that WE provide the content, specially those of us who have spent thousands of hours writing reviews.

message 48: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Ben wrote: "Madame Bovary and Memoirs of a Geisha are sponsored books? Really?"

Ben - I imagine they are using known books during this 'testing' phase. If they rollout with it, you'll see all the nonsense that we'll get as recommendations.

message 49: by Sandra (new)

Sandra I haven't had a sponsored book or listopia spam since I unchecked editorial, back in my last post of April 25. Ah bliss!!!

message 50: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Sandra wrote: "I haven't had a sponsored book or listopia spam since I unchecked editorial, back in my last post of April 25. Ah bliss!!!"

I've had it unchecked for a long time and I get them several times a day. That tells me that they are still testing it and haven't given up on the idea.
