Pax There is a Go reference in the "Wheel of Time" Series? Really?

message 2: by Alotor (new)

Alotor I don't think there is... but I cannot delete votes although i created the list.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Alotor, do you want "The Eye of the World" deleted?

Or perhaps, whoever added the book could explain why they think it belongs on this list?

message 4: by Alotor (new)

Alotor I'd like it removed if there is no reference to go :)
I've read the book and I think there is no reference to go... but maybe it's an obscure one.

Thom Hey guys, I'm a huge Wheel of Time fan and can clarify - indeed, the only reason I heard of go is because of the series. In the Randland (as we call the world created by Robert Jordan) there is a game called 'Stones.' This game is without a doubt Go. The reader's first encounter with Stones is early/midway in the first book, in Caemlyn - the game is between Loial and Basil Gill.

Stones reveals a great deal about the characters - as go does in real life. Being an exceptional go player reflects all kinds of positive attributes - a keen mind for strategy, patience, ability to balance and sacrifice, cunning, elegance, refinement. In short, intelligence. The characters in the book who are the greatest Stones players are often Great Captains (the most capable generals alive), Rulers (always manoeuvring politically) or extremely cunning.

The book isn't about go. But there are probably 5 - 15 references to it in each book. Mat and Thom are always playing it in their adventures together.

Pax Thanks for this information, Thom! Sounds very interesting!
