Top Novels of the African Diaspora

We are seeing a flowering of literature by the children of Africans who emigrated to America or Britain in the 1970s. Their parents fled upheaval in Africa in search of a better life. Now their children are writing about it.

This a shortlist of books you shouldn’t miss by these authors from Mary Ann Gwinn, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and co-host of the popular weekly public television series "Well Read."

After winning a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting on the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1990, Mary Ann became the Book Editor and a weekly columnist at the Seattle Times. Mary Ann also sits on the board of the National Book Critics Circle.

Every week "Well Read" helps book lovers discover new books to enjoy. Mary Ann recommends a new list of books to viewers based upon the guest author that is interviewed on the show that week. Mary Ann's offers more about all of her “Well Read” book recommendations on her blog at www.wellreadtv.com/category/blog/.

New episodes of “Well Read” are taped weekly, distributed nationally by American Public Television and carried by local public television stations across the country.
