MB (What she read) Okay, argh! It won't let me add more than 100. I can think of lots more.

message 2: by Cindi (new)

Cindi I agree! One of my favorite genres as a child...and as an adult as well!

message 3: by MB (What she read) (last edited Sep 17, 2010 09:36AM) (new)

MB (What she read) I'm going to add some more down here that I've thought of. (Since it won't let me add them above.)

Jane-Emily by Patricia Clapp
Perdita by Isabelle Holland
Everything by William Steig
A lot of the Freddy The Detective series by Walter R. Brooks might qualify.
Childrens' picture books: the Dorrie The Little Witch series by Patricia Coombs
Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles series: The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, The Castle of Llyr, Taran Wanderer and The High King

I'll add more as I think of them.

message 4: by Tenoko1 (new)

Tenoko1 Is there any particular reason Diane Wynn Jones' books make up most of this list? I've only read 'Howl's Moving Caste', but I would hardly consider it morbid. Actually, I wouldn't consider most, if any of these books morbid- well, okay, Lemony Snickets, sure.

Are a few in the stylings of Tim Burton, sure, but none of them are morbid. And Artemis Fowl? Are you kidding me? Have any of you even read some of these books or did you just start clicking? Do you even know the definition?

mor·bid   /ˈmɔrbɪd/
–adjective
1. suggesting an unhealthy mental state or attitude; unwholesomely gloomy, sensitive, extreme, etc.: a morbid interest in death.
2. affected by, caused by, causing, or characteristic of disease.
3. pertaining to diseased parts: morbid anatomy.
4. gruesome; grisly

message 5: by Cindi (new)

Cindi I believe many of these books made the list because of the "Dark humor" subtitle. IMHO this widens the category considerably.

Misty, I've read all of the books that I voted for/added. Please feel free to add any books that you feel would qualify for this category. Or to vote on any that are already on the list. I'm considering the term 'morbid' as more of a characteristic or personality quirk of the child reading, not describing books relating to death, blood, guts and gore specifically. (I.e. #1 of your definition above.) I've added Gothic to the qualifiers. Please feel free to suggest other qualifiers.

Carly (Lis les Livres) i like the title of this list

MB (What she read) Carly wrote: "i like the title of this list"

Thanks Carly :-)

message 9: by Amy (new)

Amy Great list and interesting how many I had read as a kid. But Sandman? For kids 13 and under? No way!

message 10: by MB (What she read) (last edited Jul 08, 2014 05:55PM) (new)

MB (What she read) P.S. Everyone, I'm not policing this list. 1st) I'm not sure how without reading everything that's been suggested myself, 2) Reading age level is subjective and individual, and 3) It's fun to see it morph with everyone's input.

But, in spite of all that, let's all try to keep recommendations fairly age appropriate, okay?

message 11: by Sue (new)

Sue Bridgwater It is confusing to see some of these suggested for 'morbid kids' as has been said above. 'Dark humour' is very different from morbid - Edgar Allen Poe is morbid (and not for kids!)

message 12: by Kerensa (new)

Kerensa Fu ...I wouldn't exactly describe Eva Ibbotson's books as morbid at all, but maybe that's because I pretty much grew up on the Grimm's Fairy Tales. This list pretty much fits my elementary reading tastes, except for the horror stories!

message 13: by Cornelia (new)

Cornelia Shields This list is great! If and when I reach the end I will add any which may be missing. Is there any way to share these lists?

message 14: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Why is Harry Potter morbid?
