Lobstergirl I added.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) It's a fictionalized account, though -- does that qualify?

Did not know that. There are novels with a history setting, "Regency romances" and so on, and then there are attempts at reconstruction of historical events with imagined dialogue, etc. A whole spectrum. Then somewhere on it is "history" which is totally bogus, like the Tudor mythology of Richard III. Does history lie in the intent or in the truth ? But if the latter, alas, where will we get that truth ?
I know bona fide historians have wrestled with this problem. In the case of Scott's last expedition, Scott's journal must serve as history. ....I'm chasing my tail here, but my heart is pure.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) I see your point; I was just wondering, because the instructions up top specifically say "nonfiction." So I would think ANYthing fictionalized (regardless with however much historian street cred as to its source material, the facts involved and the writer's intention) is a no-go on this particular list.

Sarah, you created the list -- can you elaborate?

message 5: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn SUGGESTION-- Broaden the list base to include the accidental adventurer, the space traveler (actual), war (if approached as adventure, as is often the case). Three Cups of Tea was lived and written by a man who began his entire approach to Baltistan as a skier and mountain-climber.

message 6: by Sarah (last edited Nov 10, 2009 09:33AM) (new)

Sarah I broadened it to include the 'lightly fictionalized'. I've read a number of books in which the main character is no longer around, and the book has been built around speculation or recreation from the known facts.

Beyond that, I think the description is open to interpretation. I would certainly think that an astronaut's biogrpahy would count. I haven't read Three Cups of Tea, but if it satisfies some secret need for speed, by all means include it.

I guess I would prefer for it not to include war-as-adventure.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Thanks for the clarification, Sarah!

message 9: by Elyse (new)

Elyse The creator of this list says she prefers no books on war adventure. You can find this in the comment section when she was asked to clarify a few things. I removed "Unbroken" by Lauren Hillebrand.

message 10: by Tony (new)

Tony I see it's back on the list, at joint 196 as I'm typing this.

I nabbed "Unbroken" again and it is gone once more.
