Quests

In the Middle Ages, the term "quest" referred to a narrative dealing with someone who left home in pursuit of a religious goal -- to find God, the Holy Grail, Salvation, or the like. Any and all adventures and struggles which the seeker had to overcome on the way were considered merely stepping stones; they were not in themselves the purpose of the journey -- and he who forgot this one basic tenet thereby typically forwent all chances of ever fully completing his quest.

In modern times -- as, indeed, in Classic Antiquity -- the term is used somewhat more broadly, but no matter whether the goal is geographic or otherwise scientific discovery or, as in many fantasy tales (witness "The Lord of the Rings"), the salvation of the hero's world from evil, the basic tenet still holds true that the story is a quest only if the hero's ultimate goal is not to find adventure but something else and, typically, beneficial to more people than just himself (or alternatively, it's a quest for an abstract virtue -- The Meaning of Life, Truth, etc. -- or for the seeker's very own soul).

Bettie☯ Hello there dear TA - don't blast me but I have been reading rather than listing just recently. I see the lists are better than they were but still FECKING ANNOYING when one forgets to click the 'cast vote' button... whole libraries fall down the plug hole! hahahahahah

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Yes, I know -- there's already a comment in the "Listopia redesign" feedback thread asking that this extra step be removed again, too. Still very annoying indeed!

Love those blue feet ... ;) (Imagine being wooed by a guy proudly displaying to you his blue stockings!)

So what are you reading these days?

Puffins are also very, very lovely.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Yes, they are!

I'm truly impressed with your reading list!

Where do you find the time to read that many books at once? These days, I'm usually happy to get around to ONE for a few moments every night ...

message 6: by Bettie☯ (new)

Bettie☯ mp3 is for work
pc is for home work

bbc are just short episodes - like having a sweetie really!

e book is for in the car

and bookie books are for sofa evenings and night-time bed.

I am lucky to live quite a solitary life so I can manage many more reads than those younger, with families, town living and employed.

what's your fav read of the moment?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads My favorite read of the moment is probably Vanity Fair. Very funny!

It's ages since I read that but I do remember laughing when I was supposed to be crying...

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) I decided for once to go against principle and read a much-advertised recent bestseller (or three -- Larsson's "Millennium" cycle). And for once, I'm not even regretting my decision, either!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I really enjoyed the first two - haven't managed to get my hands on the third.

once the cover of the first is opened, you won't come up for air until it's done and dusted

yeah - sometimes contemporary, mainstream fiction is the way to go

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) It actually took me a while to get into the story -- I didn't find the beginning all that convincing (there's a bit of a plot hole in the beginning with regard to Blomkvist's Wennerström research), but once Salander entered the picture I was all ears and ... yes, basically haven't much come up for air since. Just finished book 1 and moved on to book 2.

Ages since I read "Vanity Fair" as well ... so long, in fact, that I'm no longer even sure what's in the novel and what's only in the various movie & TV adaptations! (That probably means I should reread it, too, and pronto ...)
