Books on the Worst Books of All Time List That I Love

If you disagree with any of the books on the worst books list, and want to say so, here is your chance. I think it should be understood, but obviously it is impossible to have a true opinion of a book (pro or anti) if you have not read it. So, don't go with the popular vote, go with your own knowledge.

JG (Introverted Reader) Great idea for a list! I definitely think people should get to vote for whatever they want on the "worst books of all time" list, but it is nice to be able to fight back for the books I love.

message 2: by Toria (new)

Toria How can these books be on a worst books list? I love more then half of the books on here! People should be less hatefull! Everyone has diffent tastes in books and people should accept that!

message 3: by Laura (new)

Laura I notice something interesting, at least about the books that are scoring the highest here that made the other list. They are either A) great (but often incredibly hyped) commercial successes or B) books that are often assigned in school. Both of these circumstances can breed GREAT dislike, either from those who wish to be "different" and hate on the commercially successful books OR from those who rebelled against things they were told they HAD to do (e.g. read a certain book by a certain deadline).

message 4: by Monnette (new)

Monnette Most of these books I LOVE!

message 5: by Cher (new)

Cher Worst: hard to read, that is complicated stories and language; or terrible writing and stories.
I mean you have Jane Austen here, the first type
and the Twilight series, the second type.

Too bad they are lumped together here. Not the same beasts at all.

most people just lump in books they don't like on the worst lists... like Interesting Times.

David THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

message 15: by Emily (new)

Emily I had already given most of the books on this list 3-5 stars...I guess I have awful taste ;)

message 16: by Barb (new)

Barb I strongly agree that many people put books on the worst list that involved difficult subjects that may have elicited very strong emotions or were difficult for the individual to read. Some books may have required a maturity level not yet achieved by the reader. For example, Tuesdays with Morrie is not a book I would recommend for a teen, unless it was a very mature teen. Many of the life lessons discussed by Morrie just don't hit home to someone who has not yet left their parents house, unless they are a strongly empathetic individual. Jane Austen is very funny, but the language may be difficult for some, and if assigned for school- deadly.

its wierd...to kill a mocking bird is a great book... thats just so odd

message 20: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Piscalko Some of these books are classics & they've won the pulizer, so why would anyone consider them the worst books ever read? Maybe they should expand their reading venue. I know everyone has their opinion & their own likes and/or dislikes, but get over it! I would never put a book on the worst books list unless it was truly an unbelievably bad book & the whole world agreed.

message 21: by Louis (new)

Louis I saw this list and thought 'yay!' then I realised it's pretty much the same list... It's personal taste people!

message 22: by Margaryta (new)

Margaryta THANK YOU FOR POSTING THE TWILIGHT SERIES UP HERE!!!!! gosh, i hated the books! they deserve to be up here. i hated Twilight and Breaking Dawn most, then it's New Moon then Eclipse. i think the 3 books in the series should be moved farther up on the list (in my opinion)

message 23: by Kylee (new)

Kylee Well, I still do not like mob-dick. I literally fell asleep reading it!

message 24: by Irene (new)

Irene Moby-Dick is very turgid, but the story is brilliant. I would recommend an abridged version.

message 25: by Sara (new)

Sara Who made the freaking worst books of all time list? The Twilight series and maybe a few other travesties that I missed are the only bad books on here.
To Kill A Mockingbird?! Pride and Prejudice?! The Giving Tree?!? What the hell?
Who is this person? I need to freaking bash them over the head with a dictionary or something.

message 26: by Meg (new)

Meg Three of my favorite books are on this list!!!

message 27: by Marlee (new)

Marlee Laura wrote: "I notice something interesting, at least about the books that are scoring the highest here that made the other list. They are either A) great (but often incredibly hyped) commercial successes or B)..."

I think being required to analyze the text and not just enjoy it is what makes required reading so despised, at least to me.

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship Good grief, people. If you can't deal with others having opinions different from your own, what are you doing on the Internet?

Toria wrote: "How can these books be on a worst books list? I love more then half of the books on here! People should be less hatefull! Everyone has diffent tastes in books and people should accept that!"

The fact that someone votes on a "worst of" list doesn't mean they don't accept that others have different tastes. They're voting their own tastes. Why can't you accept that other people have different tastes from yours?

Sharon wrote: "I would never put a book on the worst books list unless it was truly an unbelievably bad book & the whole world agreed."

The whole world is never going to agree on anything, much less the quality of a book. This just means you can't vote, and that's no fun. Saying people need to "get over" disliking a book is just baffling. Do you also think people need to "get over" disliking traffic jams and doing their taxes? Perhaps expressing an opinion on a bad book is a way of "getting over it"?

message 29: by Adam (new)

Adam Jarvis This seems like my college course reading list plus Harry Potter and Twilight.

message 30: by Indrani (new)

Indrani Sen Why is this "Worst books list"? Most of the books are good. I went through the first page. Harry Potter may not be loved by all, but it's not "worst" by any measure. Most other books are pretty good too.

message 31: by Duncan (new)

message 32: by Karyna (new)

Karyna Has anyone else noticed that every Harry Potter book is on this list? One of the most popular series in the history of writing? UM, who wrote this fake list???
Most of these books on the first page at least are all about 3.5 stars and above. I don't mind looking through a list of "the worst books" but can it at least live up to the title?

message 33: by Mark (new)

Mark André "It is not things themselves, but opinions concerning things, which disturb men." Epictetus. (From the title page of "Tristram Shandy" translated by the author.)

message 34: by Xavier (new)

Xavier I expected some really shitty books to be on this list, but the only ones I have seen were from the "Twilight" series and maybe the sisterhood of the travelling pants (I can't be sure as I have not read it). Most of this list is composed either of literary classics (e.g., War in Peace, Pride and Prejudice, etc.) or works that have been critically acclaimed (e.g., HP, Life of PI, etc.). I wonder if this is one of those lists that is hated because of its controversial content rather than they being bad, in and of themselves.

Also, it does seem a little short sighted to rate books as bad just because they are from a different era. For instance, while Dickens may be long-winded and lead some readers to stop before he gets going, that doesn't make him a bad writer.

message 35: by Mark (new)

Mark André Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship wrote: "Good grief, people. If you can't deal with others having opinions different from your own, what are you doing on the Internet?

Having an opinion about a book isn't quite the same thing as having an opinion about a "traffic jam". If I like a book, and you don't like the same book, the only conclusion we can draw is that it is not the book. The difference is in us.

message 36: by Sally (new)

Sally Who in the ayche ee double hockey sticks would put Calvin and Hobbes on a worst book list????
