Jennifer Thank you for posting this list. This has to be some of the best stuff to read to understand mental illness and mental hospitals: first hand accounts.

message 2: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan Yeah; a lot of people have no idea what they're really like.

message 3: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Fox I am diagnosed with schio-afffective and borderline personality disorder and by reading these books, it can not only fascinate me, but if maybe I can get my parents to read a couple of them, it can better help them understand what exactly I go through; several suicide attempts, major depression, anger issues, and constantly bouncing in and out of psychiatric facilities.

message 4: by Meaghan (new)

Meaghan I've been in psychiatric wards three times (severe depression) and they kept me alive, but were extremely unpleasant.

Recently I saw my psychiatrist and mentioned some friend of mine who'd been fired from his job and had said something about being "so depressed I want to slit my own throat." My psychiatrist said "What's his name" and I just smiled and said, "Friends don't let friends get committed, sorry."

Priscilla Very interesting list and great suggestions. Thanks for sharing.

Very wise of you not to reveal your friends name. I saw how they treated my father so I have never been in a mental hospital but I have had days where I thought about suicide everyday. IMO most of those people are vicious sadists. From what I have seen I would rather die than go into a mental hospital but that is just me. I hate those people. I feel pretty much the same about all their drugs too and cannot take any of them. I can however endure Liquid Serotonin which took away suicidal thoughts.

Thanks for this list as knowledge is power.

Meaghan I used to think I'd rather die than go to the psych hospital. But then I actually went and it sucked but not as bad as I thought. Eight years later I am doing much much better than I was before I went into treatment. I have to take five medications a day but they work.

Glad to hear it. I think a friend takes that many. She had her injection today so she doesn't have to swallow so many pills.
