Here's a list with all of those fantasy books we love, partly because the horses are just as important as the main characters :).

mirba poison study serie do not have any important horse that I know of...

message 2: by mirba (new)

mirba and black beauty is not really fantasy...

message 3: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Rodning I want to note that I voted for The Last Unicorn not because of the unicorn (who, of course, is not a horse) but because there is a lot of discussion about the difference between unicorns and horses.

message 4: by Miriam (new)

Miriam Don Quixote is not usually billed as fantasy, either.

message 5: by Avaminn (last edited Oct 12, 2014 11:15AM) (new)

Avaminn F'nett Black Beauty is a very good horse book, but there is nothing fantasy about it.

Also, a lot of books on this list may have horses (Eye of the World, The Princess Bride) but the horses are not a major part of the story.

message 6: by mirba (new)

mirba removed the books that are not fantasy or do not have significant, strong horse characters.

message 7: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Rodning Don Quixote is not in the fantasy genre, technically, because there was no fantasy genre during the Renaissance. Don Quixote is absolutely fantasy, though. The entire purpose of the story is that Don Quixote has read too many books of chivalry and launches himself into a fantasy world of his own creation, in which he FLIES ON MAGICAL HORSES, and performs other quests of epic proportions. If Don Quixote has been removed from this list, that was a grave mistake.

message 8: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Rodning Also, horses may not be a major part of The Princess Bride, the movie, but if you have actually read the book you will know that Buttercup has a horse, named "Horse," who is her best friend and constant companion, especially during the early chapters of the book.

message 9: by mirba (last edited Oct 21, 2014 06:25AM) (new)

mirba I would think that the description fantasy book in which the horses are just as important as the main characters do exclude books where a chapter or two talks about horses.

I'm sure there are lists where The princess bride book appears. It's one of my favourite books and I've read it enough times to now parts by heart. "Horse" is a nice character but he's not just as important as the main characters.

Also, Don Quixote (which I read also but quite a long time ago) has allucinations and dreams about stuff, that doesn't fall into the fantasy book category... Fantasy is where the world is fantastic and the physics laws are different from the world in which we live. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy
Most popular genres in which it is listed are "Satire, Parody, Picaresque novel, Farce"

message 10: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Rodning That doesn't mean it's okay to remove those books from this list. If your opinion differs from someone else's, you can comment on it here in the comments section, of course, but you cannot prove that either of those books should be removed from the list.

I'm not trying to toot my own horn, but I AM writing my dissertation on the treatment of horses in heroic literature, and both Don Quixote and The Princess Bride are in my dissertation. Also, almost 100 people on Goodreads have shelved Don Quixote as Fantasy. I suspect that they would also find that the book fits on this list.

I hope you are not insinuating that Rocinante is not as important as the people in Don Quixote, because I can provide loads of articles and references that would indicate otherwise.

message 11: by mirba (new)

mirba Kirsten if you feel so strongly about it you can simply readd it, I'm sorry if it caused you such intense discomfort.
I took off the "study" serie and some other books that do not even have horses inside that where added here for misterous reason. I took off Don quixote and other clear non-fantasy books on requests from another user(one named like me but not me) who pointed out she felt it should not be on this list - I agree with her that it is NOT a fantasy book but hey, the world is wonderful because it's full of differences so please feel free to readd it.

message 12: by Kari (new)

Kari Why the Children's Books? Goodreads is for finding something to read and as an adult I do not want to read them no matter how good . Same for the young adult books I read them when I was younger and don't want to read them now. Too much time wading through them should separate by age group.
