message 1: by Melki (new)

Melki Sorry. I haven't read anything by this author. I did see the movie 'Iris' though. Does that count?

message 2: by Hayes (new)

Hayes I've not read anything either... something to look forward to!

Indeed it does, add it please Gaeta.

Yes, :that::squalor: amazing.

message 7: by Wanda (new)

Wanda The one where the young girl comes to paint a portrait? Title? Title? Lightbulb . . . The Sandcastle.

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Oh, it's been too long since I read Iris Murdoch, I think she was brilliant. I've added some extra titles even though I haven't read them because they're in 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.

message 20: by Lazarus (new)

Lazarus P Badpenny Esq It's interesting that Murdoch regularly featured on the Booker shortlist but since her death is in serious danger of being forgotten. Even the bigger bookshops increasing fail to stock her work in any depth, or so it seems to me. I suppose once you're dead and your publisher has strip-mined your old papers one's brand worth diminishes somewhat and perhaps the philosophical nature of her writing is a tad unfashionable these days... Such a shame

Thanks Lazarus. You have nailed just why these author lists are helpful, they keep alive the names of the great.

I see that there are volumes that need combining.

Hayes Bettie wrote: "I see that there are volumes that need combinin.."

Done

message 23: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Thank you Hayes, you're the best!

message 24: by Corey (new)

Corey Pung This list doesn't make much sense to me, primarily because A Fairly Honourable Defeat isn't on it--not only should it be here, but it should be #1. To my mind, A Fairly Honourable Defeat isn't just her best book (it's worlds better than A Severed Head), but it's one of the best books of the 20th century.

You can add it Corey, that is how these lists are formed; people, like you and I, just add what they know and like.
:O)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's easy to add books to lists; at the top of the page, at the tab next to "all votes."

message 27: by Janet (new)

Janet This author was mentioned for descriptions of tea menus! Like low tea, high tea etc... Lol. Any Ideas of which books I should check out?
