Thom Dunn Problem here: I want to list Twilight, but Meyer was unknown to me when I read it but for all the hype. Perhaps we need another list ? Something like "What's all the fuss about ?" (As Truman Capote said of To Kill a Mockingbird). People who finally get around to reading a classic (Gone With the Wind, say) and are disappointed.

Jim This is one of those lists where there's not going to be substantial agreement, as I consider many of the above writers to be pure dreck -- throughout their entire opus.

message 3: by Reese (last edited Jun 10, 2010 01:24PM) (new)

Reese I get the part about the relationship between one's assessment of a work and the factors (including timing and press, etc.) that can determine expectations. But I think that "How Did They Get to Be Classics?" may be the place to list works that a reader can't fully appreciate because the build-up doesn't match his/her experience.

T, unless you correct me, I'm going to assume that I'm not supposed to think that Meyer is among your favorite authors. Your ability to keep your audience from being sure about your intentions is remarkable (in a good way).

message 4: by Reese (new)

Reese Jim,

In starting the list, I wasn't aiming for "agreement." I thought that the list might steer fans of selected writers away from books that are nowhere near their beloved authors' "finest" work.

Thom, I believe there is already a list called "Disappointing Books," or something like that. I voted on it, so if you click on my avatar you should be able to find it.

Thanks to you both. I tried with Meyers, really tried, but she is so very pedestrian....Come to think of it, that may be her appeal. Same could be said with Stephen King (I'll have you know I read every goddam WORD of The Stand !)

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

T- I agree about both Meyer and King. I just felt like "Twilight" was too. darn. long. Took me much longer to read it than it was worth. Quite enjoyed the film adaptation, though. I plan to watch the films for the rest of the series, but not spend my time reading the books.

I think it's time to admit to myself that I just do not like King's writing style. But I'll probably keep trying things by him, trying to "get it," and kicking myself every time.

message 8: by Val (new)

Val There are other lists for over-hyped and disappointing books. The idea behind this one is different, to show the books where an otherwise good, popular or favourite author was not up to their usual standard, or the book where a series runs out of ideas.
I find this list more helpful than the other kind, so thank you for setting it up Reese.
(I am left wondering how many J D Salinger books the voters for "Catcher in the Rye" read though.)

I'm glad that you consider this a helpful list. Since voters often misunderstand or pay no attention to the stated purpose / title of a list, I appreciate your emphasizing the objective of the list.
