Jerome Who is this Ike Skelton guy? Why his name on this list? Does he want to impress everybody with the books he's read and how smart he is?

message 2: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Aug 07, 2012 02:32PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Mr. Skelton is a former Member of Congress from Missouri, and was formerly chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

He's 81, which is plenty of time to read a lot of books on an area you find interesting.

message 3: by Denys (new)

Denys John Someone has added many books to the list. No one who is serious about military history would think the Shaara novels are important. Here is a link to the real list:
https://www.usnwc.edu/getattachment/0...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Point out the specific titles that need to go, and I'll be happy to remove them.

message 5: by Denys (new)

Denys John Well, the real list has 50 books but this one has 100. That's a lot of pointing out. To start with, the Shaara novels are not on the list. Neither is John Adams (that is a good book though.) Also, the US Constitution is on the list but not listed above.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The US Constitution is #45, I think.

message 7: by Denys (new)

Denys John Oh, sorry.

message 8: by Andy (new)

Andy As Denys points out, additional books have been added from the original lists. Congressman Skelton created two lists of fifty books each, which he called recommended reading on history and military affairs. The lists are published as an appendices to two of Thomas E. Ricks's books, which is where I first heard of them.

Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq (this one itself made the second list)
The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008

message 9: by Kevin (new)

Kevin List can be confusing, especially for newbies. Ike created the list but never discouraged anyone from adding books. As long as an 'add book's button' remains on list many consider the list an open invitation to add their personal favorites along with Ike's original titles. Is there a way to create a closed list? A list without an Add Books button? If the creator of the list fails to state the list should remain at his original 50 book's then the list becomes open season for all.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads A. Yes.
B. But then no one can actually vote on it.
C. You can ask a librarian to "clean" it. It helps to specify where on the list the books you want to remove are (makes them easier to find).

I'd recommend C. I'll volunteer to clean this, if that's what you want.

message 11: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Susanna, there is a please do not add books to this list posted.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Yes, I saw that. Most people will pay attention to it, but sometimes they don't. The offer remains open.

message 13: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Susanna, perhaps it's a good idea to clean the list if the intent was to remain at the 50 original books. As far as some of the comments left by Denny about the historical value of some titles, I find that to be nothing short of conjecture. This list was posted with very little information of it's intent, but having the 'do not add books to this list' posted should be honored by all.
