"50 Fantasy & Science Fiction Works That Socialists Should Read" by China Miéville

From the list "Fifty Fantasy and Science Fiction Works that Socialists Should Read" by fantasy/New Weird author China Miéville (Perdido Street Station, The City & the City), written for Fantastic Metropolis, now available on the GR group "Your Politics Are Boring As Fuck".

In China's words: "This is not a list of the “best” fantasy or SF. There are huge numbers of superb works not on the list. Those below are chosen not just because of their quality—which though mostly good, is variable—but because the politics they embed (deliberately or not) are of particular interest to socialists. Of course, other works—by the same or other writers—could have been chosen: disagreement and alternative suggestions are welcomed. I change my own mind hour to hour on this anyway."

NOTE: This is a reading list compiled by China Miéville; I'm posting it on Goodreads to share with others. Please DO NOT add more books to the list, but feel free to vote on the ones already here. Titles were originally listed in alphabetical order by author.

(Naturally, one does not have to be a socialist to read the books or vote, but it's an interesting list nonetheless.)

Brad Great list, Jacob. I only voted for what I've read so far, but I own a bunch of stuff on here, so I will be coming back to alter my list eventually.

Jacob Thanks. I've been referring people to this list for years, ever since I had such good fortune with Freedom & Necessity, but I've only read a handful of the books here--five or six, at most. I'm going to work to correct that, next year.

Clouds There are 52 books on a list called "50 books..." - and the site the original list is on is down. What shouldn't be here?

Also - I've read 8 so far and have a couple more on my long-list, but this is a great looking list and I'm sure I'll come back to it at some point. :-)

My mistake. I added all three titles in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy, and now I can't remember if China listed the trilogy as a whole or an individual volume. And I can't find the list reproduced anywhere, dang.

message 5: by Jacob (new)

Jacob HEYWAIT. Turns out someone reposted the full list (with China's notes) on the GR group "Your Politics Are Boring As Fuck". Sweet. Turns out he lists the full trilogy, but just to keep this list at 50 I think I'll let "Red Mars" stand for the full series. I'm going to delete the other two, and clean up the links at the top. Thanks for pointing them out.

message 6: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Edit: There doesn't seem to be a way to delete Blue Mars and Green Mars, unless I can convince everyone else who voted to delete them from their lists. That sounds like work. I think I'll let them stay.

I can delete Green and Blue for you, but those votes will be lost. Your call?

message 8: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Yes, would you? I keep forgetting about it, and I'm still not sure how to remove them. All you need is librarian status, right?

James Jacob wrote: "Yes, would you?"

Done. The list is back down to the magic 50 again.

"I keep forgetting about it, and I'm still not sure how to remove them. All you need is librarian status, right?"

Yep, librarian status, and lots of self-confidence to click through the rather stern warnings that Goodreads flashes up to stop 'improper' removals from lists...

As the man himself said: "Know your enemy."

BookLovingLady I've read The Yellow Wall-Paper but couldn't vote for it as I haven't read the 'other stories' 😊

My edition has 'only' The Rocking-Chair and Old Water included 😉.
