Nonfiction Books about Earth and Water

Jeanne asked me to recommend some books for her son-in-law, John. He is searching for "two nonfiction books, please:

• Earth: Something fun about exploring the earth. Preferably tells a story and weaves a bit of science. Examples: a space book is "The Grand Design" by Hawking and "Fire Monks" by Busch.

• Water: I'm surprised I'm having a hard time finding a popular (not text book) science book on water. Examples: "The Matter of Air" by Steven Conner, "Fire" by Stephen Pyne, and "The Earth Machine" by Edmond Mathez. The Reaktion Series book "Waterfall" is not quite it, because it focuses on a particular form of water. I'm looking for something broad and accessible, like the "Fire" book that talks about nature and culture."
