Travis Great list. Nice to get exposed to some books that I might have otherwise missed. Hope we see more participation in this one.

message 3: by Davonee (new)

Davonee I'm currently reading The Scarlet Letter for school and i have to say its so hard for me to get through. If i didn't have to read it i would have a banded it a long time ago.

message 4: by Mark (new)

Mark Andrei wrote: "Don't try too hard to read books that don't draw you in. Most of the time people do that is so that they seem 'well-read'. From personal experience just drop it and read something that interests yo..."

have to say i half and half agree with you Andrei. I've reached the stage where life is too short to force myself to read books others imply are necessary for my rounded well being but i adored the Heart of Darkness.

message 5: by zara (new)

zara i heard life of pi was really good, but is is SO BORING. they say it gets better but i just don't have the time or patience, so i gave up on it and started reading books that interests me.

message 6: by Erinza (new)

Erinza I LOVED

message 7: by Robyn (new)

Robyn My sister read Theodore Taylor's The Cay for English class last year and said it was good. Coming from her, this is a very big compliment. Is it as good as she says?

message 8: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix When I was much younger, I made it a point to finish any book I started. I now consider that policy a less than optimum use of my time.

message 9: by Craig (new)

Craig Wow. It amazes me how some of these books are on this list. Different strokes, I suppose.

message 10: by Antoine (new)

Antoine It isn't that I hated any of these books. I wanted to like them, and most of them I have started more than once. But there is something that gets in the way, and I don't know what it is.

message 12: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn POEMS OF EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY: for "Recuerdo": "We were very tired, we were very merry, We rode back and forth all night on the ferry......"

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I hate it when you have a friend that is just really insistent you read something that is COMPLETELY AWFUL! I don't want to tell them they have horrible taste but I just can't slog through that junk. Honestly, it offends me when people compare Twilight to Harry Potter. Twilight is definitely one of the worst books I've ever (attempted) to read.

message 15: by Xenophon (new)

Xenophon Hendrix Why are people putting bestsellers and classics on this list?

message 16: by blueemerald (new)

blueemerald Great list! Thanks for the opportunity to contribute.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Xenophon wrote: "Why are people putting bestsellers and classics on this list?"

Are any of them not evocative of New York City?

message 18: by Reese (new)

Reese The setting of THE FRONT PAGE is Chicago.

message 19: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Mar 22, 2012 01:50PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Where is it on the list, Reese?

ETA: Am removing Sister Carrie, which is set in Chicago.

message 20: by Reese (new)

Reese THE FRONT PAGE is currently # 184.

The main characters in SISTER CARRIE move to New York; in my opinion, the work's most powerful (i.e., disturbing) scenes are set in NY, where the novel ends.

message 21: by Reese (new)

Reese Susanna,
I just put SISTER CARRIE back on the list. One other GR member voted for it before I did, but I don't know who did so.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads OK. Well, I'll get The Front Page, then.

message 23: by Reese (new)

Reese Susanna wrote: "OK. Well, I'll get The Front Page, then."

Thanks for striking THE FRONT PAGE.

message 24: by Tom (new)

Tom Comparatively little of GATSBY takes place in New York City.

message 25: by Drew (new)

Drew Isn't Clockwork Angel set in London?

message 26: by Jaye (new)

Jaye There are duplicate numbers... but , concerning one of the 422s
The Last Picture Show - New York? I thought Texas.

message 27: by Robert (new)

Robert Iulo Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "Where is it on the list, Reese?

It begins in Chicago but ends in New York.

message 28: by Anna (new)

Anna Too Many Cooks takes place in West Virginia (it's one of the only Nero Wolfe mysteries not set in NYC). It's currently at 444, and should probably be removed.
