Erin Holy list spammer!

Deleting more than 80 novels including Impostor and Scarlett. Ugh.

message 2: by Erin (last edited Jul 17, 2013 05:02PM) (new)

Erin Yeah... I think someone might have been confused as to how to use listopia. Anyone can vote books to the list, but a lot of times people get confused and add books that don't qualify...

For example, today I am removing The Storycatcher and Mayhem because both books have original publication dates in 2013. Most of the ones I removed the other day were older. Twilight and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and a bunch more I don't remember. Hate taking books down, but I'm also not of fan of lists that have a bunch of random unrelated titles.

message 3: by Erin (new)

Erin No prob. I doubt I'll be able to keep it clean once more books start getting released but it should be pretty good for a while.

I'm surprised so many people have found it already. It is fun to see active GR users.

MaryannC. Book Freak Woo-hoo!!! Cant almost wait till the new year for some of these to read!! :D

message 5: by Lara (new)

Lara Maynard My want to read list is getting very fat.

message 6: by Erin (new)

Erin Mine too!

message 7: by Robin (new)

Robin As much as a liked it, A Discovery of Witches is not a 2014 book. However, she does have a third one coming out next year but I can't remember and I'm on my Kindle...

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Looks like the list got spammed again :(

message 9: by Erin (new)

Erin I think I got them all but if anyone sees something I missed, please shoot me a message.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Thanks Erin! I still see A Discovery of Witches and a Nora Roberts book, but everything else is gone.

message 11: by Erin (new)

Erin Gone and gone!

message 12: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Surrender the Heart, Love's Awakening, A Lasting Impression and all the books by Julie Lessman (except Dare to Love again) are old

message 13: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn Surrender the Heart, Love's Awakening, A Lasting Impression and all the books by Julie Lessman (8 books) except Dare to Love again are old. Also House of Velvet and Glass

message 14: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Also The Book Thief & Love's Reckoning are not 2014 releases either.

I've been wondering for awhile - does anyone have any thoughts about all of the romance / Christian romance that's on this list? I don't really consider those straight up historical fiction, in the sense as say, Philippa Gregory or Ken Follett.

message 15: by Erin (new)

Erin I hate spammers... cleaning house again.

Yeah, if you look at the top 10, only 3 or maybe 4 of them are general historical fiction - the rest are all Christian fiction. Compare that to the 2013 HF list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

message 17: by Erin (last edited Nov 26, 2013 05:15AM) (new)

Erin I've been wondering for awhile - does anyone have any thoughts about all of the romance / Christian romance that's on this list..."

I understand what you are saying and yes, my original intent was that this list be strictly straight-up historic fiction, but those lines get blurred and people define sub-genres differently. For example, I consider Elizabeth Chadwick & Philippa Gregory historical fiction writers, but both have works listed as historical romance on Goodreads. Where do you draw the line when perception is so varied?

And more than that, how do you enforce those definitions once established? I am daily removing books from this list, mostly from authors attempting self-promotion despite the fact that their books do not meet the 2014 requirement and that is a pretty cut and dry issue. :/

message 18: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Wiseman Hi Erin, I'd just like to offer my apologies. A friend added my book, WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND, because my publisher, Kensington, considers it a January 2014 release even though it comes out Dec. 31st. They always release the last Tuesday of the month before the official release date, and this year the last Tuesday happens to fall on the last day of the year. Sorry for the confusion.

These lists are intended to be communal and fun and to help users find interesting reading material. I agree that adding strict criteria defeats the purpose of the listopia community.

That being said, I find it problematic that the majority of the books in the top 20 are more "genre fiction" than historical fiction. I'm not sure if certain people or groups are just being more vocal or demonstrative in voting. But personally, I'm just finding it hard to find useful content since so many of the current results fit into subgenres like Christian fiction.

Erin Ellen wrote: "Hi Erin, I'd just like to offer my apologies. A friend added my book, WHAT SHE LEFT BEHIND, because my publisher, Kensington, considers it a January 2014 release even though it comes out Dec. 31st...."

Hi Ellen. Thank you for the apology, it is appreciated but entirely unnecessary. I didn't mean to sound as if I was targeting authors. I've had a lot of well-meaning and over enthusiastic fans posting too. GR lists the voters in order so it is easy to tell who added a particular book. I am even guilty of adding a few titles scheduled for a late 2013 release, so I would hazard to say some don't even realize their vote doesn't qualify. The last few days have simply seen a lot of the former group and I've become somewhat discouraged trying to maintain the list. You and any author I may have inadvertently offended have my sincere apologies.

That being said if you are an author and you are excited about your own 2014 book, VOTE IT UP! And don't be ashamed about it. You have every right to cast that vote.

I am right there with you Sarah. Totally understand. :)

message 22: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Wiseman No worries, Erin. Someone told me my book had been taken off the list and I figured it was because of the release date. I wanted to explain why it might have looked like a 2013 release even though my publisher considers it a 2014 release.

message 23: by Erin (new)

Erin Thanks for your understanding. :)

message 24: by Viktor (new)

Viktor 5% of the covers have a masculine slant; 10% of the authors are men. Do men not read historical fiction?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Men read historical fiction; do they write it? is perhaps your question.

Also, the gender balance of the voters on this list (over 800) is probably not 50% male, either.

message 26: by Erin (new)

Erin Interesting points. Honestly I hadnt noticed.

message 27: by Gary (new)

Gary They should be calling this list "Historical bodice-rippers", not historical fiction -- it seems to be all romance novels w/historical settings.

message 28: by Erin (new)

Erin I'm not sure I would call them all bodice rippers, particularly as several of the christian titles have absolutely no explicit content, but to each his own.

Perhaps you might address the deficiencies by voting up those titles you feel do qualify as historical fiction.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Looks like some more non-HF books made it into the list:
- Conversion
- A Flame in the Wind
- The Outcast Dead
- A Highly Unlikely Scenario...

Also, "Julian Carleton" has 2011 publish date...

message 30: by Erin (new)

Erin Gone! Thank you Sarah

message 31: by Shoshanah (new)

Shoshanah I don't think that Minding Molly is actually historical. Instead it looks to be modern day Amish.

message 32: by Erin (new)

Erin Did some research and you are right. Minding Molly doesn't meet the requirements.

message 33: by Shelley (new)

Shelley Fantastic list. Am making it a priority to get some of these read THIS year! :) Thanks for keeping it updated and keeping it relevant. Great job!

message 34: by Sarah (new)

Sarah A couple of possible edits:
Hannibal: Enemy of Rome - published in 2011
The Nature of Fire - modern day setting
Sewing Can Be Dangerous - published in 2013

message 35: by Erin (last edited Jan 31, 2014 11:18PM) (new)

Erin Hannibal: Enemy of Rome and Sewing Can Be Dangerous are both gone, but I'm hesitant to remove The Nature of Fire until we know more.

There might be a historic story line, something like what Anne Fortier did in The Lost Sisterhood, and I don't want to make that call until we can confirm one way or the other.

message 36: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Gone With the Wind is on page 2 for some reason.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Well, it's certainly historical fiction, but not so much coming out this year! Removed.

message 38: by Erin (new)

Erin Wow... Gone now.

message 39: by Erin (new)

Erin Thanks Susanna. Must have removed it just as I was opening the page. ;)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It was a race!

message 41: by Amanda (new)

Amanda The Invisible Bridge was published in 2010.

message 42: by Erin (new)

Erin Can someone catch this one? I'm at work and my phone is freaking out trying to edit the list. :(

message 43: by Erin (new)

Erin Thank you to everyone who has helped monitor this list! I really appreciate it. :D

Removed a few oddballs today but not a lot. Discovered some gems for my tbr on the last page too. ;)

message 44: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie Hudson I'm adding my own book BEHOLD A LONE HORSEMAN to this
list as it's one of the best. No kidding. I have the
reviews to prove it!Jeannie HudsonJeannie Hudson

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Behold a Lone Horseman appears to have been published last year. Is that correct, Jeannie?

message 46: by Erin (new)

Erin Appears to be.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah River Oaks Plantation (both versions) and the 2 Amber Schamel books appear to be 2013 releases.
Also, The Devil in Marshalsea seems to be on here twice.

message 48: by Erin (new)

Erin Taken care of. Thanks!

message 49: by Rachel (new)

Rachel L. Demeter Hi, Erin!! Would it be okay if The Frost of Springtime was added to this wonderful list? :P

message 50: by Erin (new)

Erin Of course. Feel free to add it on.
