The original article is here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/... and accompanies their 50 key moments in English literature (Goodreads list version here.)
The Guardian listed 51 items but put the 3 Bronte books into one item, so there are 53 books here.

It says "The Guardian's 50 most influential books" yet there are 53 books on this list, which means someone has been adding titles...

I think Emma's character probably has had more influence on readers than Elizabeth Bennet's, even though Pride and prejudice is the better book in my opinion ;-) But again, when it comes to being the most influential, I think they might be right, no matter how much I love Pride and prejudice.

There are meant to be 53 - I put it in the intro.:) The Guardian added "one for luck" and listed the 3 Brontes as 1 of the 50.
Pride & Prejudice has certainly been more influential since the mid-90s when it and Austen generally was made much more popular by the TV series. But given some of the authors on here this list takes a more academic & longer-spanning view.

They mashed my three girls into one three-headed lady writer like a kind of Kerberos? Dear, dear.

I know! And if we had to add American writers too, the list would have to be MUCH longer, so it doesn't make any sense.

And why are any of these books about domesticity, ie: cooking, manners, cleaning, etc. in a list of the most influential women authors in English literature?
