Best Gay Romance With A Character(s) Who Has A Disability

Note: I was unsure if I should use "disability" or a more current phrase like "handicapable" so I contacted a group that deals with this and they told me "disability" was fine. I mean no offense so if anybody would like this changed then please contact me and let me know...I'll adjust the title.

This is a list for mm/gay romance books that have characters with some kind of disability. These could include but are not limited to - vision impairment/blindness, hearing loss/deafness, limited mobility, prosthetic limb...etc.

This list is not about fetishism...it's about celebration and appreciation.

message 1: by Jenn (new)

Jenn just gotta ask:

are there really that many books under the heading 'gay romance with a character with a disability'???

message 2: by Erastes (new)

Erastes Frost Fair

One of the protags has a club foot

message 3: by Christy (new)

Christy Stewart If this had been titled with the word "handicapable" I would have pissed blood for a week.

message 4: by Perpetua (new)

Perpetua or a more current phrase like "handicapable"???

Would you really see that as a current phrase?? As a wheelchair user I'm glad that you didn't use that phrase becuase I'd not be to impressed!!

message 5: by kasjo_peja (new)

kasjo_peja Could somebody please add tags to the list - gay disability, romance, et cetera...

Ashley♥Alexis Jenn{WeEzEr LuVa!!!!} wrote: "just gotta ask:

omg. those were my exact thoughts!

message 7: by Alli (new)

Alli i think it is great that the issue is being addressed, disability and mental illness has been handled really well in the books i have come across so far. My partner works in the disability area and we have an autistic child... I have read 1/2 of this list and have put the rest in my to read and to buy shelves!

message 8: by Penny (new)

Penny Brandon Writing a book about someone with a disability was quite hard, but I wanted to make sure the reader felt the strength that Adam possessed and didn't feel sorry for him. By some of my reviews I think I achieved that. What do you think. My novel is Blind Passion

Well, good that they're trying, I guess!

Forget "handicappable" or "differently abled", they just sound stupid!

The most current term these days is "person with a disability"

message 10: by Jess (new)

Jess Candela FYI, Paper Planes is on there twice, at 55 and 72

message 11: by Callie (new)

Callie Strong Hand doesnt have any characters with disabilities...not sure how it got on this list.

message 12: by ttg (new)

ttg The only thing I can think of for why A Strong Hand is here is maybe for Nick's twinging hip, which affects him at one point. Not sure if that would qualify as a major physical disability, but I guess...it does disable him at one point? That one's debatable.

I love Will and Taylor, but I'm not sure why Dead Run (#134) is on this list. If it's for the temporary amnesia, I'm not sure if I would qualify amnesia as a disability...

message 13: by Justin (new)

Justin South Virginia wrote: "Great list in promoting inclusion of people with disabilities as MCs and by authors."

Virginia, I and numerous other authors don't like adding their books to Best of... or Favourite… or Sexiest… etc. lists, preferring that readers do so if they deem the books qualify for such honour. Often authors who do are looked upon poorly, especially when wildly and pompously claiming theirs is better than time proven favourites or classics.

Accordingly, I have started an author friendly list here : http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/24...

I hope authors and readers will quickly populate the list.

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim Thanks for adding my novel,'Every Time I Think of You,' Yes, disability is a major theme in the book (and its upcoming sequel), so I appreciate any attention and inclusion in such lists!

message 15: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Clear Water is on here at 17 and 124 - don't know if they can be combined?

message 16: by Kate (new)

Kate I noticed a few people commenting on the fact that the maker of this list mentioned the term "handicapable" when trying to decide the title. They apparently weren't impressed with the term. I, however, would like to say that I was impressed with how a group was contacted to obtain the most current, politicly correct word. I thought it showed admirable conscientiousness.

I am definitely reading your book, Jim..I just read the blurb and just captivated me

message 19: by Jim (new)

Jim Thanks, Lily!

Yes, 'Message of Love; the sequel to 'Every Time I think of You' was published last month, and deals even more thoroughly with disability of a main character. Please consider voting it up in this list. Thanks.Message of Love

message 20: by kimberly_rose (new)

kimberly_rose I am delighted by this list! Thanks, Michael, for creating it, and thanks to everyone who has added to it!

I have a "name that story" question. A long time ago, I read a free online fiction (I'm pretty sure it was that) and the MCs were best childhood friends. One was confident, cocky, Italian, and the other was quiet, happy, and had Aspergers syndrome. They were neighbours and both were being raised by single moms. (I'm currently reading Bodies in Space, and it reminded me of this other story.) The story goes through them growing up. Beautiful story with scenes I will never forget.

But!

I do forget the title and author! Can anyone help me?

message 21: by Ashley♥Alexis (new)

Ashley♥Alexis Are you talking about The Least of These ?

message 22: by kimberly_rose (new)

kimberly_rose YES! AshleyAlexis, here, please take this piece of strawberry pie I wish I could give you and my enthusiastic thanks! You're amazing!

message 23: by Emma Sea (new)

Emma Sea *pouts* wants pie too. For nothing.

message 24: by kimberly_rose (new)

kimberly_rose Oh, lookie! I have more pie! I *always* have pie. All kinds. I am obsessed with pie. If Emma wants pie, she will have pie. Pie, a good book, a few friends to chat with about said book, and I have hot-damn-yeah! So, c'mon, Ems, PIE with me and AA!

message 25: by Emma Sea (new)

Emma Sea yay pie!! I ♥ you, MightyMaeve

message 26: by Ashley♥Alexis (new)

Ashley♥Alexis It's so funny because I read your post and im like I KNOW THAT BOOK!!! But I couldn't remember the name of it. Luckily for me i just reorganized my bookshelves so it was really easy to figure out what it was. Glad I could help!! And thanks for the Pie!!!!!!!!!!!

message 28: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper The Mating of Michael and Tinseltown are both on here twice. Someone said there was a tool to combine editions on these lists? If so it would be handy indeed - I didn't keep a link to the comment though.

message 29: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart Hi Kaje, yes, any librarian can run a duplicate check. If you are one, you should see a little "edit" link under the description, and that takes you to a page where you can run a duplicate check, delete books, and edit the title and description of the list. I just ran one, and it found 4 duplicates, so those should all be combined now.

Elliot Sinclair Are there any MM Romance books where the protagonist has a prosthetic/bionic hand?

message 32: by ttg (new)

ttg Elliot wrote: "Are there any MM Romance books where the protagonist has a prosthetic/bionic hand?"

If you like steampunk, in Clockwork Heart one of the MCs has a mechanical hand.

message 33: by Jazmin (new)

Jazmin My favorite books are not here, they have characters with disabilities and are the best I've read. Some from this list are not even good...

please add the books you like to the list, Jazmin, so others can find them too.

message 35: by ttg (last edited Mar 09, 2017 12:35PM) (new)

ttg Jazmin wrote: "My favorite books are not here, they have characters with disabilities and are the best I've read. Some from this list are not even good..."

Thanks, Jazmin! Anyone can add books to this list. All one has to do is go to "Add Books to This List" which is on the top-right of the list itself. For a book to be added, it needs to be in your library, meaning you have it added as a book that you've read, are currently reading, is one that you want to read, or is on some other shelf in your library. Next to each book, there will be a "add book" button, and you can click on it, and it will be added to the list.

As for what books are good or not, that's more based on each reader's personal opinions. What might be "best" for one person may be different from another.

Please add your favorites though! They would be great additions.
