Meels My teacher did make me read Romeo and Juliet as well, but I was never and still am not glad of it. I hate that story!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I hated it when I read it in high school - having a notorious "book killer" for a teacher did not help.

I've read it again as an adult, and can appreciate its beautiful language; even though I am still quite aware that it has problems in its plot structure. (So I up'd its rating here from 1 star to 3.)

Hahaha! That's funny!

message 4: by Lori (new)

Lori I thoroughly, heavily, and heartily dislike Shakespeare's works.

Oh, I won't go that far. I loved Taming of the Shrew even when I was 16. Since then I have read The Tempest and King Lear and loved them both...oh, and A Mid Summer Nights Dream which I liked, but wouldn't say I "loved" it. I just hate Romeo and Juliet no matter who's telling it. CRAP ENDING! (Sorry if that's a spoiler for anyone, but really, if you don't already know that...)

message 6: by Lori (new)

Lori I never read A Midsummer's Night Dream, but I saw the play. And I have no clue whatsoever how I even got there! And while the play was pretty ok, I'll never read it. I find Shakespeare's writing like every archaic, overacted play and movie; I just hate it. I wonder if anyone else has ever admitted to hating Shakespeare??

message 7: by Meels (new)

Meels Um, Kyle, you do realize that To Kill A Mockingbird is not Shakespeare, right?

Might as well be; don't like that one either! I may as well state right now, that I also dislike the majority of books termed "classics."

message 9: by Meels (new)

Meels I was kidding, Kyle. It was the way you said it, and the conversation that was going on...it could have appeared as though you were listing it as a work of Shakespeare. Which plays have you read?

LotF is great. I recently watched the old film

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057261/

Classic!

To each his own, Lori! I abhor Terry Goodkind and would rather gouge out my own eyes than read another of his books...loads of people love them. I also hate Westerns, all Westerns and Romance novels. I can have romance in my novel, but there has to be more too it, it can't be an actual Romance novel. That's a billion dollar industry for a reason. Still, I hate them.

message 11: by Meels (new)

Meels Kyle, you can get Catcher used on amazon for a buck something:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_nos...

B&N also has them 6.99 new and .95 used. It's worth it:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/catch...

I'm partial to the comedies (Shakespeare), Taming, Much Ado and The Tempest are favorites I totally recommend. Also, Shakespeare's plays (if you sprinkle them between other reading) are pretty short...well, not all of them. But, The Tempest and most of the other comedies are shorter. So, it's not really that much of a time commitment.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Reading them out loud helps. (A hint from my Shakespeare professor in college that I found very useful.)

I heartily agree with your views on Terry Goodkind; similarly Westerns; a good number of Romance books are just soooooo b.a.d.--and that's an understatement...although I have worked on some that were surprisingly good...and not Harlequins! Gak! See? We're friends already!

message 14: by Jacquelyn (new)

Jacquelyn Amelia wrote: "My teacher did make me read Romeo and Juliet as well, but I was never and still am not glad of it. I hate that story!"

I like Romeo and Juliet in how satirical their "romance" is. I like that some people--ignorant as they are--still think that Romeo and Juliet is a love story! I cringe to think that even some well-educated people consider it the greatest love story ever written. Anyway, I like the story because I honestly think it's hilarious! And hilariously still relatable in modern day! The true tragedy isn't just that they died, the true tradedy--in this Shakespeare fan's opinion-- is that Juliet gave her innocence to a guy that didn't really like her, this guy tricked her into thinking she loved him--also her fault I will willingly admit, and they gave their lives for people that, in the grand scheme of things, they didn't really care for!
I hate how most people interpret the story, but love the story itself, that's just me though!
