M/M books with Tragic/Sad Ending (No HEA / HFN)

M/M gay books with tragedy/sad ending that made you cry buckets. No HFN or HEA at all just downright depressing with no hope or even a glimmer of happiness.

NOTE: Books that is just sad, depressing and makes you cry but have a HFN or HEA does not qualify to be on this list. If unsure of a book, please try not to add it here. TQ

For example, the death of the protagonist should suit this list. Another good example is Romeo & Juliet. These are the kind of endings we want to see here on this list.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Since, there are a couple of UNSUITABLE BOOKS keeps popping up back here, it would be pointless to try to remove it.

So I figured, I will just list those books that SHOULD NOT be on this list here instead:

1) Acquainted with the Night by Tymber Dalton (has a rather sweet HEA although the ending is a tearjerker. So it's a bittersweet HEA)

2) Home Trained For You by Selim (has a HFN ending)

Kat Even though I'm dreading the day you'll make a tentacle list, I love this! And I love tragic endings...will think about fitting ones.

Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) Loco, there's already a tentacle-sex list out there which I adored very much. LOL

But I love tragedies too. Oh noes he died sob stories. Oh god, he is dying soon. Romeo and Juliet we can't be together EVER!

Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) This list was actually inspired by this sad manga I've just finished reading - Ame nimo Mayuwanai by Rie Honjou by Rie Honjou

message 4: by Danny (new)

Danny Tyran Someone in the M/M romance group told me that to be qualified as a romance, a story SHOULD have an HEA or at least an happy ending. I was trying to enter a book with a sad ending in a list of romance stories and the moderatrix rejected it. What do you think of that?

She even give me this link to prove what she said:
http://www.rwa.org/p/cm/ld/fid=578

I love to have a variety of endings in the books I read. I hate to know in advance that it will have an happy ending. I like to be surprised.

I cannot vote though because I've never read these books. I'll try to find the book I was speaking of and to add it to your list.

That is one of the classic rules. Some people don't even like an HFN ending. I guess if you have a sad ending then it is a 'tragedy' and not a 'romance'?

Danny - you are killing me with that avatar. Too hot for words :)

message 8: by Jen4607 (new)

Jen4607 I wish I had some to add but I can't think of any. I loved Acquainted with the Night but wasn't the ending a little happy? I might have to PM you Kyn, lol.

message 9: by Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) (last edited May 07, 2013 05:32AM) (new)

Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) Danny,

I beg to differ from such claims because it would be like trying to tell people that Romeo & Juliet is NOT a romance? Huh? Should I rest my case here already?

The romance genre is about having a love story as a central plot but what does that have to do with how a plot would end? Let's take Want Me by Rowan McBride as an example, if not for her adding that canon epilogue after she has finished that book, it would not even really have a HFN ending. Some of her beta readers even said it's cruel to end it such a way (hence, the epilogue was created).

So, what I am saying is that, a romance is a love story. Hence as long it's central plot is based on a romance/love story, then it can have whatever ending but still would be categorized under the ROMANCE genre ;) Reason being, central plot does not dictate the ending of a story.

*Cough, cough, clears throat* Actually, there's another can of worm which I am afraid to open here -Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z Brite. Is it really a romance? I does have romance in it however twisted it was but it also centered on psychological horror. There, I have open yet another can of worm for debate. Way to go. LOL

But it's a nice discussion. Thanks for bringing it up. So, please add whatever sad/tragedy ending romance books you have found here.

Kyn

I am in total agreement with you on that book. Will need to remove it so it would not confused others and result in more sad books with HEA being added later :p

Tat book does have an HEA albeit sad and all but it is romantic and sweet as hell too. Love tat book. A super unique gay romance erotica book everyone shud try.

TO EVERYONE,

I am very sorry to have to remove a book. Pls pardon me.

Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) Once again. I am very sorry to have to remove Acquainted with the Night by Tymber Dalton as it was not exactly suited to be here as it has a HEA ending.

Hope for your kind understanding. TQ

I echo your sentiments here. Sometimes a story would gives more impact with a sad ending and vice versa.

I too love to go into a book without knowing what kind of ending it would have.

As for the books I am going to read from this list, I would read it for the bitterness I'd crave from time to time. ;) Just like how ppl would read Romeo & Juliet for countless times even knowing how tragically it would end and tat they are going for a major heartbreak and point of no return.

Both these are on my list. I think Shire is a great writer. Did you read Afflicted? Really liked it.

I disagree with that too. That's like saying, for example, a drama can't be comedic also. The best books are a mix of themes, and tragic romances are often more memorable. Tear my heart out, I don't mind. :)
I think if love and lust are involved, there's potential for romance. Darker or tragic romance is still romance.

Hmm, I wonder if I have anything to add to the list. Checking...

EDIT: Added. And I challenge anyone to read "Fifteen Reflections", and manage to not vote it here.

EDIT2: There have to be more manga with tragic endings. Sakura Gari? And Kunieda Saika's Bannin and that story with the unpronouncable Rain (Itsuka Ame) title.

Yup, cos Acquainted with the Night has HEA although it's sad but it is a sweet ending too. Bittersweet yet it's a HEA. I love that book to bits. You read it too. Try it. ;)

And I wish I have such great memory like you. I always find myself forgetting titles of books I've read. One of the reason what I have such long list of tags/shelves. It helps me to remember. But, one thing I don't like about my shelf is tat it attracts unwanted attention and insincere friending. Some peeps would just friend me and then ignores me later on. Felt used. Not very comfortable with tat :(

Kynthos-the-Archer (Kyn) If not mistaken, Bannin by Kunieda Saika has a sad ending. Must go re-read it to reconfirm this tho.

And I have just read the 1st story in it (Bannin - The Guardian). Super tragic ending and super sad. Sob!

Will now go prowl around for a list to add it to.
