CLEAN Romance Books

This is a list I want people to contribute with romance books that are clean. As in NO descriptive sex in the books. There can be implication and passionate kisses but nothing beyond that please! I want it to be books people feel comfortable having their mother read.
Please only CLEAN romance!!
Doesn't matter what type of genre they are included in as long as they are clean. Also if it is a series of books ONLY add the FIRST book (or the one with the romance). This is only some of the clean one's I have come across I couldn't add all the ones on my books. Recently I have noticed more people discussing the language of a book so lets keep the cursing mild and below.

Amelia, the pragmatic idealist hmm there seem to be a lot of people with different views on what "clean" means... :P some of those shouldnt be up there!

Margaret Larsen Turley I haven't read most of these books. I've commented on those I did.

message 3: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I tried to add a book and it didn't add.

message 4: by Linda (new)

Linda Banche I tried to add my book, Pumpkinnapper, which fits your list, but I'm not sure it took.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It seems to be on the list, Linda.

message 6: by Ashley (last edited Dec 11, 2009 03:54PM) (new)

Ashley Lets keep in mind that, yes there are different interpretations of what "clean" means. However, I have read many of the books on this list and I consider many of them "clean" reads. As in I would be comfortable with my mother reading them. If you have a different opinion on a book that is fine and I would love to hear the reason for your opinion. However, if you have a difference of opinion on a book then state more than just a general idea as to why you think this book isn't clean. Give facts or quotes from the book. Then leave it up to other people to decide, on their own, if the book is clean or not.

message 7: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey I would also be interested to know which ones some of you think shouldn't be on this list.

Some of you might be interested in the Clean Romance group here on goodreads.

message 8: by Randi (new)

Randi (The Artist Formerly known as Guitar Chick) A clean book for me would be no sex and no effing. Any other swear used on occasion wouldn't hurt me, but eff is pretty much unacceptable.

Amelia, the pragmatic idealist i personally wouldnt put city of bones or hush hush on the list...yeah technically there are no "sex scenes" but they're pretty sexual in nature...i wouldnt want my kid cousins reading those books. "Clean" seems to imply more than just absence of sex, it implies a certain type of romantic relationship...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads For me the standard was "could I give it to a twelve-year-old or my grandmother without blushing."

message 11: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae Blood and Chocolate shouldn't be up there. No sex scenes but a good amount of cursing (including the first dialogue) and TONS of sexuality especially surrounding the teen female protagonist.

message 12: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Well, OK, Susanna, I'll try, but two things first:
1) You don't know my grandmother !

2) If romance is clean, you're not doin' It right.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Hey, I said it was *my* standard - your mileage may vary! LOL

message 14: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 11, 2010 09:06PM) (new)

I prefer clean books too. There have been some books I would have really liked but they were too graphic. I have had to overlook more and more in Charlaine Harris books but I do keep reading them.
I would NOT put them on this list.

Mummy Cat Claire Thank you for putting this list together. I went through the whole thing and added almost all the books that I haven't read. Fabulous.

message 16: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn There is a rape in Clarissa but if you blink your eyes you'll miss it.

message 17: by Pat (new)

Pat I really appreciate this list and others like it. Keep them coming...

message 18: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Susanna wrote: "For me the standard was "could I give it to a twelve-year-old or my grandmother without blushing.""

Definitely agree with you on that one.

message 19: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Really glad to see how much this list has grown since I created it. Keep all the books coming! Definitely will have to start reading many of these!

message 20: by Megan (new)

Megan I personally don't feel like House of Night is applicable here, considering all of the (extremely) heavy petting, and while I can't remember how graphic the sex scene in the third book was it was still definitely too graphic for me. :(

message 21: by Twiliter9763 (new)

Twiliter9763 I wasnt able to see whether or not I had done a review on this book so just in case, Ill do one now.

I honestly don't understand why people hate on this book so much. My theory is it's because this book touches on every female's basic instinctual desire to be swept away as in the case of Bella.
They spend an insermountable amount of time fooling themself into believing in the garbage that society has led them to belive, which is...if you act like a woman, your weak!
While I can agree that Bella may have had a some what addictive personality, I don't see anything wrong with loving someone to the degree that you would give your very life for them! That is something that we see little of now days. Society is selfish and cruel. There is not an ioda of dedication to one another nor is there any such thing as an unrequited love.
We marry and then divorce just as quickly.
This book is a refreshing view into the way of the past. We see how things might have been only a 100 years ago with men treating women as if they had value. It gives us a glimpse into what it is really like to actually take seriously the vow to love, cherrish and honor till death do you part.
Now days its till "I cant stand you anymore."
some have also said that Edward bordered on abusive and stalkerish. Maybe in the real world but this is only a book and it was written with the intention of conveying a truely astounding romance between two people so I think as long as your able to keep in mind that it is only the work of fiction...then the situations in the book that might be considered as such, can be seen for what it really is...a discription of an everlasting bond between two very wonderful people.
You cant and shouldn't take this book seriously or even expect that there is an "Edward" for you out there somewhere. SHIVALRY IS, WITHOUT A DOUBT, DEAD!
Nothing could be less romantic for me then some woman going around trying to be some type of crusader. How is a man to view her as someone to romance or sweep off her feet if she is running around emasculating him every time he turns around. Sorry if I offend any feminists out there but I feel a woman can be a lady and still be strong.
The series is curtainly has its flaws but if you have an imagination then you can get past those flaws and enjoy the story for what it really is...a Timeless love story.

Everybody loved this book, but now, loads of people act like it was totally lame. Meyer's way of writing is so addictive, and I don't know a single person who wasn't hooked up..

i was thinking the exact same thing. i haven't read the 3rd book but I've heard about that scene

message 25: by Neveen Badr (new)

Neveen Badr (Seraphina Reads) Romance books can be clean; because romance is showing your love and effection even if you could not touch.

message 26: by Meridyforgot (new)

Meridyforgot I would have to say that Enchantment by Orson Scott Card was NOT clean.

message 27: by Bronwyn (new)

Bronwyn Younger-howard Yes, I was pretty surprised that some of those books were on the list, because I know they aren't that clean!

message 28: by Breanne (new)

Breanne The Tiger's Quest rating, doesn't do justice. :( It should be in the top 10.

message 29: by Maria (new)

Maria Gad I can,t believe , only those are clean romance , and the rest of all the million books aren,t

Makaila Maria wrote: "I can,t believe , only those are clean romance , and the rest of all the million books aren't"

I am 13 and i like romance books, but i know what you mean i only know a few that aren't on this list and this isn't very many

Jessica Amelia, the pragmatic idealist wrote: "i personally wouldnt put city of bones or hush hush on the list...yeah technically there are no "sex scenes" but they're pretty sexual in nature...i wouldnt want my kid cousins reading those books...."

I agree. I did love both books though. But another book I know without a doubt Isn't clean is Graceling. It has two sex scenes and it goes into quite a description during the first scene. It almost ruined the rest of the book for me.

message 32: by Makaila (new)

Makaila did it?

message 33: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Makaila wrote: "did it?"

Are you talking about Graceling?

message 34: by Normandy (new)

Normandy I did not see any books by Betty Neels and her books definitely fit in this category. Her books are sweet and gentle and no hint of anything - maybe one or two kisses. I have read two of her books and I loved them. They were Stormy Springtime and A Small Slice of Summer.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads You could add them; it's easy to add books to a list. Next to the tab that says "all votes," at the top of the list.

message 36: by Normandy (new)

Normandy Ok I added them. Yeah !

message 37: by Pat (new)

Pat Looks like a great list!

message 39: by Elyza (new)

Elyza I really don't think Marked(House of Night, #1)
by P.C. Cast should be on this list. I know its not my list but I wouldn't put any of their books on this list. Other than that its a pretty awesome list!

You're completely right. I almost didn't finish it after the first one. It definitely shouldn't be on this list.

message 41: by Angela (new)

Angela Nevey Berry wrote: "Romance books can be clean; because romance is showing your love and effection even if you could not touch."
You're absolutely correct! I wish more authors felt that way :).

message 42: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Jessica wrote: "Makaila wrote: "did it?"

Graceling has a sex scene in it and its a litte bit descriptive. I would remove it off the list.

Agreed. :-)

message 44: by Cindy (new)

Cindy I can remove books if you'd like. Tell me which ones you don't want, Ashley.

Mummy Cat Claire A lot of these books I got free from Amazon. Not sure if they are still listed as free.

message 46: by bedlambelle (new)

bedlambelle Thom wrote: "There is a rape in Clarissa but if you blink your eyes you'll miss it."

Since the rape in Clarissa is not romanticized, it does not really have any capacity to double as pornographic unless you are really twisted. The language also helps to keep the reader from having graphic mental pictures. It's not one of those scenes that are like, "he raped her but then she got off, so it was okay in the end because she secretly liked it," that you see in romances sometimes. I think that the rape in Clarissa served a purpose for the plot and was not added for entertainment or titillation.

message 47: by Brenda (new)

Brenda Thank you for taking time to put this list together! This is amazing! I am always looking for a CLEAN romance! And now we can all help each other find one!

message 48: by Ashley (new)

Ashley This list has grown so much!! When I started this list there were only maybe 50 books on the list. Now there are more than 1000! Thank you to those of you who gave specific examples as to why you think some books are not "clean."

message 49: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Cindy wrote: "I can remove books if you'd like. Tell me which ones you don't want, Ashley."

How can you remove books? I don't even have that ability and I created the list.

message 50: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Some tips to those of you looking for CLEAN romance.
If the front cover has either character half dressed, or standing in a provocative manner; there is a good chance it will contain unclean material.

Also if in the book description it has words such as: passionate, sexy, wicked, naughty etc. In other words if it has words that are synonomous with sex there is a chance it will have descriptive sex scenes. Watch out for words in the description they can give away whether there is appropriate material or not.

Another great thing is amazon.com now states in the descriptions with SOME books if it has "adult content" or "mature audiences" or "explicit sex scenes"
