Books by Authors of African Descent That Don't Feature Slavery, Colonialism, Racism, or Poverty

Because the black experience has just as much meaning and depth without the white gaze. High, middle brow, Literary fiction and genre fiction only please. Books must also be in English and have U.S. publication. Please no hoodlit, erotica, no streetlit, no poetry, no romance, no religious fiction books, no chick lit, no young adult, no middle grade.

All books of the above genre are fine, this just isn't the list for them. Also, please do not add books where race is prominent, even when racism is not. Let's show other parts of the black experience.

PLEASE DO NOT USE MY LIST AS A WAY TO PROMOTE YOURSELF OR AN AUTHOR YOU ARE WORKING FOR. ANY BOOKS DOING SO WILL BE REMOVED. NO SELF PUBLISHED!

Addy The following has been deleted because it is clearly promotion (I'm not stupid): Resurrecting Cybele by Jenifer Mohammed. School Spirit Day (Spirit Week, #3) by Alshia Delores Moyez, Fake An Injury Day by Alshia Delores Moyez, School Colors Day by Alshia Delores Moyez, Twin Day by Alshia Delores Moyez.

Also, the people that voted for this on my lists should really stop spamming other books lists.

message 2: by Addy (new)

Addy The Same River Twice by Alice Walker and An African in Greenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie were removed because they are memoirs not literary or genre fiction.

message 3: by Addy (new)

Addy His PhD Is in Hypocrisy: And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend by Tayo Oredein has been removed because this is not a list for poetry. Fiction only!

message 4: by Addy (new)

Addy The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes was removed because the author was not of African descent.

message 5: by Addy (new)

Addy Lyrics Alley by Leila Aboulela was removed because the author is not of African descent. I understand she is Sudanese, but that is a nationality not a race. She has to be of the African race to be on this list.

message 6: by Addy (last edited Jan 05, 2015 07:26AM) (new)

Addy Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward was removed because as much as I liked the book, poverty was the backdrop of the story. Per the description: "A big-hearted novel about familial love and community against all odds, and a wrenching look at the lonesome, brutal, and restrictive realities of rural poverty, Salvage the Bones is muscled with poetry, revelatory, and real."

The point of the list is to expose the diversity of the black narrative because there is more to it than poverty. Again, removed.

message 7: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Question. *raises hand* Is this list strictly African, African-American or a mix of both?

message 8: by Addy (new)

Addy Jenny wrote: "Question. *raises hand* Is this list strictly African, African-American or a mix of both?"

Both. Anyone of African descent can be apart of this list. However, I'd prefer if the list included books were published in America, and in English.

message 9: by Eco (last edited Oct 08, 2015 12:51AM) (new)

Eco Communities Library It is always important to keep in mind the diversity of the black narrative, which is why this list is great. Happy black history month reading!

message 10: by Kammie (new)

Kammie Thank you for putting this list together!

message 11: by Addy (new)

Addy All books by Gamal Hennessy have been removed. Please, only high quality work only. No erotica or hoodlit. Just Novels and short stories. Preferably in print, not ebook. I've updated the description to make sure there is no more confusion about what type of books are to be on this list.

message 12: by Addy (last edited Feb 22, 2016 06:08PM) (new)

Addy The following were removed because they were low brow, erotica, or self published.

Eve of Passion by A.C. Arthur
Destiny's Surrender (Destiny #2) by Beverly Jenkins
Sweet to the Taste by Alyssa Cole
ME2 by Jourdan Cameron
Me Squared by Jourdan Cameron
Loving Nate by Janice Ross
Loving Laney by Harmony Evans
Forever with You by Farrah Rochon
****
I appreciate the enthusiasm some have for this list, but please think before you add books.

message 13: by Addy (new)

Addy Gullah Images: The Art of Jonathan Green by Jonathan Green was removed because it isn't fiction.

message 14: by Peggy (new)

Peggy Hi Addy -

You may want to add BEFORE I FORGET and GRANT PARK by Leonard Pitts.

message 15: by Addy (last edited Mar 07, 2017 05:17AM) (new)

Addy @Peggy

I will as soon as I read it. I only place books on the list only after I've read them. This is to ensure quality and fulfillment of the list's purpose.

However, if you have read these books and are satisfied that they fulfills the basics requirements of the list, feel free to vote for them. I will however place those books on my list for next year and read them.

message 16: by Kim (new)

Kim Schilling I love that you made this list! Thank you! I wonder if you know of a similar list for children? I want to make sure my daughter has lots of books with characters that look like her and her family, but when it comes to books with black children I tend to run into the same thing. Thanks!

It's not like this list per say, though I have thought about it, but here is a list of books by black authors (it links to the years before as well) that you might find useful:

Addy I've removed the books from Alexandre Dumas. The purpose of this list is not to feature mixed raced authors. Black authors only, thanks.

If you're still interested, I created a list. I don't read as much MG and YA as I want, but if you are anyone else knows any books that meet the criteria, then feel free to add to this list:

Bridgett Pride Addy wrote: "I've removed the books from Alexandre Dumas. The purpose of this list is not to feature mixed raced authors. Black authors only, thanks."

Hello, I am confused about this comment. Are you choosing to deny recognition to people who are bi-racial? Dumas' mother was an African enslaved woman, so, in my mind, he clearly falls into the category of an author of African descent, and is black. Is there another reason why Dumas would not be included?

Addy @Erato I've removed these books because this author is mixed race. This list is not for mixed race people. Please do not put Dumas back on this list again. Thank you.

Yayaroscoe For years I've been struggling to find the words to articulate my feelings towards the black literature that is so predominant, and my reluctance to read them. This list is what I've been looking for, the black narrative/experience is not always suffering and darkness, why should the literature be?
Thank you for this list :)
