Nancy I've stretched a point to include to include two memoirs about battlefront nursing; even though not technically military the authors served in very similar circumstances under military rule. Remove if not to your specifications!

I rejected a few memoirs of people who worked with the military but were themselves civilians.

Manray9 Thanks for your input. I've been meaning to read Vera Brittain. I'm familiar with "Ill Met: By Moonlight" from the movie based upon it, "Night Ambush," starring Dirk Bogarde as Patrick Leigh Fermor.

Ian Hi. I like the idea for the list. I'm not sure if you wanted books to be added but there was nothing to say we couldn't so I have added Field Marshal Slim's memoir "Defeat into Victory"; "A War of Shadows" by W.S. Moss (chronologically a follow-up to "Ill Met..."); and Siegfried Sassoon's WWI memoir.

I thought about adding Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia", but wasn't sure it met the criteria. On the one hand it's a war memoir by a British author, but on the other hand it's about the Spanish Civil War, so not a conflict that involved British regular forces.

Ian: The list started as my Top Ten, but feel free to make additions. I have no disagreement on Slim or Orwell. I will quibble about Sassoon. Memoirs of an Infantry Officer is a fictionalized account of his experiences with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, and as such doesn't qualify as memoirs.

Fair point about Sassoon's book. The thought that it counts as fiction did occur to me too. I consider it a thinly disguised memoir, but I take your point, and it's your list!
