Jan C Question: This is supposed to be the movie came first?

Then what are 2001, Terms of Endearment and The 7% Solution doing on this list? It is my recollection that they were all written before the movie.

As Jan pointed out, neither THE SEVEN-PER-CENT SOLUTION nor TERMS OF ENDEARMENT should be on this list. The judgment of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences makes inclusion of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY appropriate. Although 2001 blossomed from a short story by Arthur C. Clarke, AMPAS nominated it in the best original screenplay category; composition of the screenplay and the novel occurred simultaneously.

Reese The screenplay of COCOON (by Tom Benedek) was based on Saperstein's novel, and Charles Webb's THE GRADUATE was written before the screenplay for the film (Willingham & Henry). I'm guessing that there are other books that don't belong on this list, but I'm giving up the search.

Buggy Hi Jan and Reese, I sort of figured that this was going to become a problem with this list (which came first that is) I'm also curious about a couple of the omnibus' that have been added?

I can remove the books mentioned but as you also said Reese (giving up the search) I don't want to have to research every book added here either.

GR"s also takes it super seriously when you remove books from lists so I just want to make sure before I do it.

So I should remove;
-Terms Of Endearment
-7% Solution
-Cocoon(surprised about that one, now I want to read it)
-The Graduate

If my sources are correct, then the four mentioned in message #4 shouldn't be on the list. But I'm clueless when it comes to the "powers" responsible for the operation of the Goodreads site, so what to do about the situation shouldn't be my "call."

message 6: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I removed Endless Love - the novel by Scott Spencer definitely came first.

message 7: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl But I'm clueless when it comes to the "powers" responsible for the operation of the Goodreads site, so what to do about the situation shouldn't be my "call."

As long as it's clear or can be definitively shown that a book doesn't belong on a list, it can be removed by a librarian. The powers of Goodreads don't have to become involved.

message 8: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn Suggestion: Remove a bogus entry when it gets up fairly high on the list....that way you don't have to bother researching aberrant one-offs.

message 9: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I removed Terms of Endearment, The Graduate, and The Seven Percent Solution.

message 10: by Buggy (new)

Buggy Thanks Lobstergirl :)

message 11: by Michael (new)

Michael Lobstergirl wrote: "I removed Endless Love - the novel by Scott Spencer definitely came first."

This was back on the list, so I removed it again.

message 12: by Michael (last edited Mar 03, 2013 01:28AM) (new)

Michael According to Wikipedia, Cocoon "The film is loosely based on the novel by David Saperstein." I guess that it depends how loose it has to be before it's another work? For example, although "Total Recall" by Piers Anthony is based on "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, the original is a short story and Anthony's novel is clearly a new work (albeit derivative) based on the screenplay, therefore Anthony's book legitimately stays on-list.

With "Cocoon," I think that as the only written version is the original novel, and as that preceded the film, it should come off-list. What's the consensus?

message 13: by Michael (last edited Mar 03, 2013 03:16AM) (new)

Michael "Sliver" by Ira Levin removed: Book 1991; Film 1993

"Fatal Attraction" by H.B. Gilmour removed: Book 1981; Film 1987

message 14: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth There is a novelization of West Side Story that would go on here.

Question: The movie Hondo was based on a short story by Louis L'Amour, but L'Amour wrote a novelization from the script while the film was being made and they were released concurrently. Would that qualify for this list?

message 15: by Buggy (new)

Buggy Sure Elisabeth, sounds good, add away :)

message 16: by Buggy (last edited Jun 30, 2013 12:29PM) (new)

Buggy Here's the link to a super interesting article on Novelizations from "litReactor". http://litreactor.com/columns/why-do-...

It Includes the history of novelizations and some recommended reads that I never would have thought to bother with.

Snakes on a Plane, award winning, really!?

message 17: by Buggy (last edited Nov 17, 2013 01:58PM) (new)

Buggy Removed Brokeback Mountainas the movie was based on a short story by Annie Proulx

message 18: by Rishindra (new)

Rishindra Chinta Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 is neither the source material nor the novelization of the movie. He wrote it as the movie was being mad. Even though the movie came out first, I don't think the book should be considered a novelization.

message 19: by Risingson (new)

Risingson Carlos I like this list, but apart from 2001 there are a few others that are novels adapted to film: one of the two Scarface novels (the 1929 Armitage Trail one), David Morrel First Blood, and probably others .

Please add the Yarbro novelization of "Nomads"

message 20: by César (new)

César Bustíos What about "The Fifth Element" by Terry Bisson, based on the 1997 movie?
