People of faith have been fasting for millennia, but why? What is there in the act of embracing hunger that lures in new practitioners and keeps them coming back? I've never fasted before, but I will be reading up on the history, philosophy, theology, science, and various incarnations of the practice--and I'll be collecting the books here.
