Best Fiction With Disfigured/Disabled Leads

Beautiful people are getting old. Doesn't anyone else long for characters with disfiguring scars? Who are burn victims? Are blind? Have a bum leg? Have no legs? Have NO limbs?

Well, I may be alone in this, but if not, add your favorite books that fit this category.

Bettie Great theme for a list

:O)

message 3: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl What's that children's book about a colonial boy who apprentices for a blacksmith and disfigures/burns off his hand?

message 4: by Hayes (last edited Oct 01, 2009 10:39PM) (new)

Hayes Johnny Tremain!! Good call!

But was it Johnny who burned his hand or the other one... I've just had it sent so I'll know in a while after I re-read it.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It was Johnny.

message 6: by Irene (new)

Irene It was the other apprentice's fault. That book is amazing.

Carla *Jen7waters* Wait a minute, why is Wuthering Heights in this list? And Son of the Shadows from the Sevenwaters trilogy? :O the third book of this series (Child of the Prophecy)would be okay if it were on the list, since it does have a kind of crippled heroine -she has a limp- but Son of the Shadows? I don't think so...and I can't believe The Hunger Games isn't in this, but I reckon it's hard to remember Peeta's fake leg. I'll put these on!

message 8: by Selenita (new)

Selenita Truly, Madly, Deeply? OK, the protagonist had dandruff, bad breath and diarrhea. Still, he can hardly be considered physically disabled.

message 9: by Christy (new)

Christy Stewart ........I need that book.

message 10: by Katie (new)

Katie Why is it always only the male characters who are somehow disfigured? The females on this list are at the most crippled in some way or mentally disabled. Dont get me wrong! This is not to say that these are not challenges andTHIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT THOSE PEOPLE DON'T DESERVE LOVE!!! They do! It just seems like even the literary world says to us "no one will love you and you won't accomplish success if you are "ugly" "scarred" or "maimed". None of the women/girls on this list are "scarred" or "maimed". It just doesn't seem right. . . all people deserve love. But this list seems to only echo what society tells us. Beautiful women get the best. Men are loved even with their scars. I just don't understand. It hurts me so much to see this sort of thingplay out in a world I find so much refuge and comfort in! Please someone write a book about a real disfugered girl who has adventures and finds love!! Please!

message 11: by Christy (new)

Christy Stewart I'm with Katie

message 12: by Sylvester (new)

Sylvester Modeste Mignon by Balzac should be on this list.

message 13: by Laura (new)

Laura Morrigan I thought that in the original V for Vendetta graphic novel there was never anything about him being horrifically burned and they added that in for the movie. I thought in the graphic novel it was meant to be that he wanted to be a symbol, not a person.

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura Morrigan Katie, I am still going through this list, but I am really hoping that Hester Shaw from the Hungry City Chronicles by Philip Reeve is in it. She has a very badly scarred face. Things aren't easy for her though, I am two books into the series and she has gone through a lot of pain, suffering and self hatred.

message 16: by ☆Eiko (last edited Feb 28, 2012 07:35PM) (new)

☆Eiko May I add in Masque of the Swan by Rebecca Ashe ? This is a bit similar to The Phantom of the Opera. Only difference is the end and how the protagonist is not disfigured but I'd rather say he rather has something normal humans don't have. [If I say what he is I'd be spoiling the book]

message 17: by Courtney (new)

Courtney why is Kiss of a Demon King on the list I don't remember anyone being disabled in this book? Could I be wrong?

message 18: by Christy (new)

Christy Stewart There's a problem on these lists, the fan girls of those books tend to put them everywhere.

message 19: by Mikaela (new)

Mikaela Cindy wrote: "why is Kiss of a Demon King on the list I don't remember anyone being disabled in this book? Could I be wrong?"

I agree...the only thing i can think of is that Rydstrom had a scar on his face and I think one of his horns was broken.

message 20: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Removed My Left Foot which is not fiction.

message 21: by Mikki Crisostomo (new)

Mikki Crisostomo I'd like to put in the title of Flame of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier. The heroine is a girl who survived a terrible fire but lost the use of her hands, which have become stiff, mangled claws, and received scars on her face. It's a beautiful story :)

Carla *Jen7waters* Ori wrote: "I'd like to put in the title of Flame of Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier. The heroine is a girl who survived a terrible fire but lost the use of her hands, which have become stiff, mangled claws, a..."

I TOTALLY AGREE

message 23: by ☆Dani☆ (new)

☆Dani☆ Twilight is on here? Bella and Edward aren't disabled or disfigured, in fact they're both incredibly good looking by mainstream standards and haven't a single physical flaw between them.

kittykat (Jo Tortitude) It's a real shame that some "contributors" to this and other lists don't understand the premise of the list... there are a number of books on here that just don't fit the bill at all.

Really ******* annoying.

message 25: by Allie (new)

Allie Hey y'all,

I just started a new book club called "Damage" under groups that you can join if you'd like! It focuses on reading a book every other month that is about physical, mental, emotional, or intellectual differences. (And yes, I redefine how "damage" should be viewed in the group description!) Hope you join!

message 26: by Elyse (last edited May 11, 2020 06:45PM) (new)

Elyse The creator of this list specifies physical disabilities in her description, NOT mental disabilities. I would not add any books about mental illness. But then she has listed as one of her choices, Flowers for Algernon. That book is about a mentally disabled man. So I'm not sure what to think.

message 27: by Maritina (new)

Maritina Mela Uhm, who's the disabled/disfigured person in Wuthering Heights?

message 28: by Maritina (new)

Maritina Mela Also, who's the disabled/disfigured person in Cyrano? Because last time I checked having a big nose, or a random feature that does not match society's idea of beautiful for that matter, didn't count as a disability or a disfigurement like a missing limb for example.
