message 2: by Julie (new)

Julie Naked & the Dead listed twice

message 3: by Míceál (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Survival In Auschwitz by Primo Levy is not fiction.
Day Of Infamy by Walter Lord is not fiction.

message 4: by Matt (new)

Matt Other non-fiction books are
The Great Escape by Paul Brickhill
The Great Escapes of World War II by Gerge Sullivan
The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III by Tim Carroll
The Longest Tunnel: the true story of World War II's great escape By Alan Burgess

message 5: by Míceál (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin It would be nice to get those books removed from the fiction list. But I don't know how that is done.

message 6: by Steven (new)

Steven ya know I can't really vote on this one cause I haven't read any of these yet. But they all sound very interesting and history really does fasinate me quite a bit. I saved this huge list in an email folder for later. Since you all have a big list for fiction based during World War 2. How many of you know of anything written that takes place during the Civil War?

message 7: by Míceál (last edited Apr 16, 2010 09:23AM) (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Red Badge Of Courage by Stephen Crane
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
Last Full Measure by Michael Shaara
Gods And Generals by Jeff Shaara
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
The March by E.L. Doctrow

message 8: by Steven (new)

Steven Dr. Michael wrote: "Red Badge Of Courage by Stephen Crane
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
Last Full Measure by Michael Shaara
Gods And Generals by Jeff Shaara
Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier
The March by E.L..."

Are these Civil War type books ?

message 9: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Haider There is a Listopia list of Civil War books here: http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/60...

message 10: by Steven (new)

Steven Cool, thank you for that link, I saved it so I can check it for when I am ready to read of those types of books.

message 11: by Matt (new)

Matt Steven wrote: " Dr. Michael wrote: "Red Badge Of Courage by Stephen Crane
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara
Last Full Measure by Michael Shaara
Gods And Generals by Jeff Shaara
Cold Mountain by Charles Fraz..."
Those are all civil war novels

message 12: by Míceál (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Thanks Matt

message 13: by Matt (new)

Matt Anytime Dr. Michael

message 14: by Sara (last edited Sep 11, 2010 12:31PM) (new)

Sara Shakouri I was pretty sure that Night was the non-fictional narrative of Elie Wiesel of his days in Auschwitz, but now that I see 17 people have voted for it as fiction, I'm having doubts...

message 15: by Míceál (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Night is a novel but it is based on Wiesel's time in Auschwitz.
However, Ghost Soldiers by Hampton Sides and Great Escapes Of WWII by George Sullivan are non-fiction and should not be on this list.

message 16: by Mary (new)

message 17: by Sharon (new)

Sharon I have read so few of these, I must unconsciously avoid fiction set in this period. I'm going to seek some out now.

message 18: by Míceál (last edited Jun 13, 2012 06:38AM) (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Night isn't fiction but it isn't non fiction either. It is based on Wiesel's time in Auschwitz. Shall we call it non-non fiction? Something like Hemingway's A Moveable Feast. Maybe faction?

message 19: by Míceál (last edited Aug 08, 2012 10:54AM) (new)

Míceál Ó Gealbháin Not on the list:
Whistle by James Jones.
Tour Of Duty by John Dos Passos
Harm's Way by James Bassett
The War Lover by John Hersey
A Belll For Adano by John Hersey
The Bridge by Manfred Gregor
The Night In Lisbon by Erich Maria Remarque

message 20: by Fred (new)

Fred Did I miss Ship of Fools and Castle Keep?

message 21: by Bettie (last edited Jan 10, 2013 02:11PM) (new)

Bettie Flashman in WWII!?
#305

TheGirlWhoLivedUpstairs Stormbringer (Apocalypse Then) by Daniel DeLacy The Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Apocalypse Then, #2) by Daniel DeLacy by Daniel DeLacy

New World War II fiction written from a fresh perspective by a new author. Both books available on Kindle and part of the 'Apocalypse Now' series. Go and check them out.Stormbringer The Boulevard of Broken Dreams

message 23: by Kate (new)

Kate Diary of a Young Girl, while iconic in the Holocaust/WWII narrative canon, is not fiction - I've removed it.

message 24: by Mary (new)

Mary Rude A lot of books here are not fiction -- perhaps the title of the list should be revised? And how is Silence of the Lambs about WWII?

message 25: by Joy (new)

Joy Many non-fiction books, but, as for fiction, WAR TRASH is about the Korean war and THE LEOPARD is set in the 19th century.

message 26: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Totally agree with the Book Thief--possibly my favorite book ever. I just wish The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas was up higher.

message 27: by T (new)

T Moore I cannot believe, I missed seeing "The Kindly Ones" - Littel. on the first page. You want Hitler's war? Here it is stripped naked with no holds barred and beyond.

It is as well written as "The Tin Drum" or "Gravity's Rainbow". But, it is all about the war.

There is no other World War 2 novel that comes anywhere close to it in terms of the twisted mindset that underpinned the War in Europe.

message 28: by BookLovingLady (last edited Apr 08, 2015 10:50PM) (new)

BookLovingLady The Wars by Timothy Findley is a great book, but it is about WWI and not WWII, so I've removed it.

message 29: by Jonathon (new)

Jonathon The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah by Kristin Hannah

- about two sisters in German occupied France during WWII.

message 30: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Hurley Removed the non-fiction Schindler's List

message 31: by BookLovingLady (last edited May 30, 2017 04:11AM) (new)

BookLovingLady Fiona wrote: "Removed the non-fiction Schindler's List"

Hold on.... Are you saying Schindler's List is not fiction? It might be based on true facts but the novel Schindler's Ark (or Schindler's List, if you like) by Thomas Keneally is fictional...

I've put it back on the Listopia therefore. Only pity is that the votes it had got lost when the title was deleted.

Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally

message 32: by Marilyn (new)

Marilyn The Hiding Place is a great book, HOWEVER, it is a true story of the participation of Corrie Ten Boom and her family in protecting Jews during WWII. Therefore, it is non-fiction.

message 33: by Mary (new)

Mary Rude There is definitely some confusion about the definition of "fiction" in this list. The Cambridge dictionary describes fiction as "the type of book or story that is written about imaginary characters and events and does not describe real people or deal with facts, or a false report or statement that you pretend is true." A book like Schindler's List or The Hiding Place would be a "non-fiction novel." But they certainly would not be fiction.

message 34: by BookLovingLady (last edited Jan 19, 2019 11:10PM) (new)

BookLovingLady Mary wrote: "and does not describe real people or deal with facts, .."

I partly agree... Schindler's Ark is fiction, definitely, even though it might be based on real events. It's like some of the books by the Dutch author Hella S. Haasse: She sometimes uses real characters or events in fictional books. But I guess we can go on and on about this forever... Let's agree to disagree.

message 35: by Howard (new)

Howard Jaeckel Sara wrote: "I was pretty sure that Night was the non-fictional narrative of Elie Wiesel of his days in Auschwitz, but now that I see 17 people have voted for it as fiction, I'm having doubts..."

Maybe, but you’re correct and the 17 are wrong.

message 36: by Chris (new)

Chris Uhmm... why is there so much non-fiction on a "fiction" list?

With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa is not fiction.
Helmet for My Pillow is not fiction.
Citizen Soldiers: The US Army from the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge to the Surrender of Germany is not fiction
Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest is not fiction
Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters is not fiction.
Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is not fiction.
The Longest Day is not fiction.
A Bridge Too Far is not fiction.
The Diary of a Young Girl is not fiction (and has apparently already been removed at least once?)

I haven't personally read Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal, but I'm skeptical that it counts as fiction.
There are lots of other books on the list that I haven't personally read, but look like they're historical accounts of actual events.

Then there are books like The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. Yes, it IS fiction, but it has nothing to do with WWII. There's one incredibly brief mention of the fact that the stars of the book are evacuated from London during the Blitz, but that's it, it's not actually about WWII.

Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War has nothing to do with WWII (as far as I know).

Elizabeth (Alaska) Removed Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption, because that is nonfiction and doesn't belong a list of fiction.

message 38: by rivka (new)

rivka Night is not fiction. Removed.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Berlin Diary: The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1934-1941 removed because it is not fiction.

Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War removed as not pertaining to WWII.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Removed The Guns of August. Both nonfiction and pertaining to WWI.
