Bettie Turkey is middle east? Near East surely.

Please can the cut and paste at the top of this list be written to include a roll-call of countries required.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) I'd been wondering about the definition of "Middle East" as well (re: both Turkey AND Egypt!).

However, a look at the internet's favorite source of information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East ) made me somewhat more mellow.

Also, books from both Turkey and Egypt are included in the GR list on "Best Middle East Fiction" ... (not that that's necessarily authoritative, either of course!): http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/13...

Hah - wiki just sapped an hour of my life; once one starts clicking one thing leads to another...

Yes, it seems we need a clarification/some structure as to just what countries to include here. Then I can start to list in earnest.

:O)

It does that, doesn't it? :)

List has been posted. Turkey has to be included: it was the seat of the Ottoman Empire. And the term "Near East" has fallen out of usage while the term "Middle East," for better or worse, continues to be used.

Thanks for your contributions!

Niledaughter As far as I know Egypt and Turkey are parts from the middle east , Turkey is Asian -European (Anadolia in Asia) and Egypt is African-Asian (Sainai in Asia).

As a definition I found :
"The Middle East (or West Asia) sits where Africa, Asia and Europe meet. The countries of the Middle East are all part of Asia"
