Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Hobbit is from a female perspective??????

I can't recall a female character in the book, frankly.

Dania Susanna wrote: "The Hobbit is from a female perspective??????

there are quite a few that aren't female perspective... I should have just called it 'female perspective'

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads And Harry Potter, love it though I do, is neither historical fiction or from the female perspective!

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship What's up with this list? Just in the top 10, both The Kite Runner and The Hobbit are by men, about men, with barely a minor female character to be seen! Where's the "female perspective" in that?

Glancing over the rest of the list, it looks about as bad.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads There isn't a female character in The Hobbit!

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship Hah, that's true--I was thinking of Lord of the Rings.

What were people thinking?? I think that a lot when I look at Goodreads lists, but... Really?

Actually, I'm going to be optimistic and assume the voters were female and thought it was a list of books that can be enjoyed by female readers.

message 21: by Dania (new)

Dania agreed... *sigh* although if anyone has any suggestions of a good book that SHOULD be on this list, please suggest it in the comments! I'm really interested, the entire reason for creating this list was to find new books to read...

;)thanks

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Dania, if there's anything you'd like removed from the list, just say so.

message 19: by Dania (new)

Dania ... really? how? O.O

message 18: by Dania (new)

Dania anything that doesn't fit really. I don't know all of them so I can't really say, except for the obvious ones like the hobbit, harry potter, Huckleberry Finn, the road (I think), etc.

message 17: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Mar 07, 2012 09:17PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I'll start with non-fiction (if any) and books that I know don't qualify (hello, Hobbit!).

Removed:

The Hobbit
Harry Potter
Huck Finn
The Road

Question but am retaining for the moment:

The Odyssey
The Heart of Darkness
A Separate Peace
Gulliver's Travels (May be women in the book, but I don't recall it being told from a female perspective.)
Portnoy's Complaint

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Removing Heart of Darkness; verified there are no women in it.

message 15: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer As much as I adore SE Hinton's The Outsiders, it is NOT written from a female's perspective. :/

message 14: by Petra (new)

Petra Pi from The Life of Pi is a boy, the story is told from his perspective, and there's hardly any women in it...And umm Lolita..? A novel about a (male)pedophile called Humbert Humbert...

Emma Deplores Goodreads Censorship Removed for being from a male perspective:

The Kite Runner
Of Mice and Men
The Life of Pi
The Odyssey
Lolita
Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
A Separate Peace
Gulliver's Travels

I'm being conservative about deleting, so some books that don't seem to me to fit the spirit of the list (like Pillars of the Earth--written by a man, with one female main character among many) I'm leaving because at least a chunk of the book is from a "female" perspective.

If you see other books that are a) written by a male author and b) with all male protagonists please comment with that information. A book is not "from a female perspective" just because it has a female character in it if she's seen through a male POV throughout. Personally I don't think being written by a female author with all male protagonists should be enough to stay on the list either, but I don't feel comfortable deleting those at the moment.

message 12: by Esther (new)

Esther Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy is definitely not from a female perspective.

message 11: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh I love how a lot of these, especially the ones at the top of the list, are all classics. It seems like there aren't many modern-day female perspectives - and characters, for that matter - that are really, really good, not like Jane Eyre or Rebecca.

message 10: by Donna (last edited May 14, 2013 04:04PM) (new)

Donna Davis Paula (Isabel Allende) is a memoir, no? It has elements of the supernatural, but I believe it is considered a memoir. Won't remove it unless others agree.

That's not the case with No Country for Old Men, which is a male POV through and through, and now, it's gone.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Portney's Complaint is somehow back up there again!

message 8: by Sparrowlicious (new)

Sparrowlicious Apparently this is a high maintenance list.
'The Outsiders' has a male perspective (even if Hinton is said to be a genius writer, that would be a different list)
'The Timetraveler's Wife' is from the male MC's perspective if I remember correctly.

message 7: by Jenny (new)

Jenny Eat, Pray, Love is not a novel!

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Jenny wrote: "Eat, Pray, Love is not a novel!"

I will delete it, thanks!

message 5: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten Rodning Wuthering Heights is mostly not from a female perspective (though some of it is). :/ Not sure if that counts or not...

message 4: by Mary (new)

Mary I met the author Amy Tan the author of the Joy Luck Club before in person.

message 3: by Booklovinglady (last edited Oct 04, 2015 03:02AM) (new)

Booklovinglady @Dania
I'm confused... ;-) Even more so after reading the comments above and noticing some of the books on this list :-0

"from Female Perspective" means a story told by a woman/seen through a woman's eyes? No matter whether the book is written by a male or female author?

That's what I have taken it to mean.

Me too, but some of the titles on this list are not even close...
