Jaime A possibly nit-picking point - aren't all super-hero comix science fiction at this point? After all, Superman from his very inception was an ET. Thor and his Asgardian brethren have been ret-conned into beings possessing Clarke's 3rd Law hyper-tech. Assorted 'mutant' characters and victims of radioactivity like the Hulk and the Fantastic 4 have scientific trappings, hilariously pseudo as they are. By way of addressing this (IMO) Alan Moore has used the term 'science heroes' within the continuities of his ABC series of comix.
Just some thoughts your intial selections have kicked off in my head.

message 2: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio Well, I see your point. There's obviously plenty of sci-fi elements in super-hero comics.

But it's usually considered a separate genre from sci-fi. Whether you're talking about movies or comics people tend to not mix both genres.

Personally I was looking for sci-fi comics that are closer to what we see in written novels or in movies, but let's leave it like that and see what other people think about this subject.

message 3: by Jaime (new)

Jaime I'd happily vote for SILLAGE - aka WAKE in English aka ESTELA in Spanish - by Jean-David Morvan and Philippe Buchet but I don't know how to edit GoodReads master booklist and add titles :p

message 4: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio I don't understand what you mean.

You can add the first book if you want to represent the series just like you did with Top Ten:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16...

message 5: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Hm- I originally searched under 'Wake' and found nothing relevant on the 1st 3 or so pages, but just now my results for 'Sillage' included the English translations about ten entries down. Weird.
The one caveat about the English editions here in the US is the publishers never put out the entire series, nor did they tackle the 'interstitial' books whose events took place between the main volumes. There's also some hilariously egregious censorship of the artwork in the first volume FIRE AND ASH.

Saw that in the wikipedia page. Black bars eh? Funny stuff indeed.

message 7: by Jaime (new)

Jaime The stupid it burns even brighter here in the USA because the Spanish edition's artwork is not censored and it's to be found in my local branch library...in the children's section. Sir, I ask you - WTF?

message 8: by Alessandra (new)

Alessandra Just wanted to make sure. When you say science fiction, do you mean not including fantasy? Because I've left out fantasy comics from my list.

message 9: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio Yes, you should only add science-fiction books as in this definition that's in wikipedia:

"Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens, and paranormal abilities."

But are Promethea and Swamp Thing really sci-fi? I don't know, I haven't read them but from what I know they don't seem like it.

I just want to ask you one thing. I'm doing this according to the "Best Graphic Novels" list rules so in case of series I would ask you to just add the first book of the series or a complete edition of it.

So I would ask you to erase the second book of Adéle Blanc-sec and the Explorers of the moon since they're continuation of the previous books.

Thanks. :)

message 10: by Jaime (new)

Jaime Well, Promethea does discuss concepts of human consciousness, cultural evolution and language at a pretty deep level and in a visually clever way. It also plays games with Campbellian archetypes and genre storytelling. The story's setting is a kind of hi-tech futuristic 'now' and there's a Y2K nanotech 'grey goo' disaster at one point. OTOH, Promethea herself is a figure out of myth moreso than most superheroes and there are demons and devils right out of medieval texts like Hammer of the Witches. So in short, I don't know ;)

message 11: by Alessandra (new)

Alessandra I've removed the second volumes as asked. I agree that Swamp Thing isn't really science fiction as defined, and complex though it is, neither is Promethea, so I've unvoted them too.

It's an interesting concept for a list.

message 12: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio @ Jaime: Yeah, genre boundaries can be really hard to define concerning sci-fi. It's always an interesting discussion trying to define something as sf or not, though.

@Alessandra: Thanks for that Alessandra.

It's an interesting concept for a list.

Thanks again. I really like this list function. It seems like a really helpful way to get to discover specific genres and it's also good fun. :)
