Books with a Non-Caucasian person as the/one of the lead characters.

To put it bluntly, books in which the lead character or one of the leads is not (explicitly) a white person.

Trina This should just be renamed as "Books with Non-White Protagonists." It would also be correct, as Caucasian and White are not equal terms-- Caucasian refers to people of the Caucasus region, including countries like Georgia, Turkey, Iran, etc (countries in the Caucasus region) and NOT Ireland, Scotland, German, or other countries often associated with Whiteness.
Unless of course, this list is actually about people not of the Caucasus region (doubtful), in which case... why not just use "protagonist"?

Anyway, I still think it's good lists like this exist and are being created. I wholeheartedly believe that representation matters. Just wanted to add my point.

Jane Somebody help me out here? Why is the "English Patient" on this list? ALL of the three leading protagonists are european white people.

Miriam Day You're right, unless you count Kip, the bomb disposal man that Hana falls in love with?

Thank you Miriam! But I have to say, I'm not sure if he counts as a leading part :-/

Jane Dear Readers of this list,
I was a bit shocked how short this list was, so I went over to the "A Mighty Girl"-Homepage and added a few books from over there.
BUT I heaven't read them so please if I added them on a false impression, that the leading character is not caucasian-white, please feel free to remove.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. He's a slightly romanticised character, too, as I remember? Though to be honest I recall more of the film than the book . . .

I was just about to post this. I agree completely.

message 8: by Keith (new)

Keith The description says "not (explicitly) a white person". Can the list, then, include books where one or more of the protagonists' ethnicity/skin colour is never referred to (and, presumably, isn't shown on the cover)? (What about books where the protagonist is called Thor Erikson or something but never explicitly described as white?) Or should it read "explicitly not a white person", as in at some point in the book their skin colour or ethnicity is described as non-white?

I'm also assuming that non-homo sapiens sapiens protagonists don't count (whether it be fantasy races with blue skin or future people with fur or whatever)?

Thought it was just me wondering...

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) @Tamara
Just how many books would you like....? Is it really that hard to come up with titles? Think of authors like Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison, Louise Erdrich, Aravind Adiga, Jung Chang, Shahnon Ahmad, Patricia Grace, Alan Duff, Chinua Achebe, Tayeb Salih, In Koli Jean Bofane, Buchi Emecheta, Kōbō Abe, Mo Yan, Oh Jung-hee, Andrea Levy, and so on and so forth. And they're just a tiny tip of the iceberg, as there are far too many authors and books to mention.

I can't help wondering about list like these (there's more than one on GR). I never make the distinction between skin colour, never have done either (maybe it's my nationality, or my job, or maybe I'm just 'colour blind', I don't know); it shouldn't matter, as long as the book itself is a good book, because that's what matters.

And yes, I'm aware I'm stirring up a hornets' nest here (and therefore I won't be going into any discussions).
