Ed Limelight Larry is a great book, but it is not eligible for the 2013 Caldecott for several reasons. 1)It was originally published first in England 2)The illustrator is not a resident of the U.S. (according to the book flap, she lives in England), and more importantly, 3)It was published September 1, 2011.

Ed Not to be a stickler for details, but Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature is not eligible for the Caldecott either. The illustrator Mark Hearld lives in England (at least according to Goodreads). I haven't read the book yet, but I have it on order from the library. Looks like a great book, but unfortunately, not eligible.

Ed The Cloud Spinner is an absolutely gorgeous book, and I loved it a lot, but since the illustrator, Alison Jay , was born in England, and lives in London, it is sadly ineligible.

Ed We have a few more books on the list that are not eligible for the Caldecott Award in 2013. Wolf Won't Bite! was published in 2011, and the illustrator lives in the UK so it is ineligible. Too Shy for Show-And-Tell was originally published in 2011 as well, so it is also ineligible. The third one is The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas, which I loved, but was originally published in Australia in 2009, and the illustrator lives in Australia, so it even though it is a fantastic book, and I would probably vote for it myself, it is sadly ineligible.

Now that I have finally read the book myself, I am quite sad that it is not eligible. I love this book, and it would definitely be in my top 3 if it were eligible.

Judy Desetti Since illustrations is the Caldecott point check out Falcon by Tim Jessell. Beautiful images.

Melissad Our Annual Mock Caldecott Event was Jan 17th. The winners were somewhat surprising. First, we had more books that ever, about 70 titles. The groups were more divided about their selections than in previous years.

Our winner was Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen.
Our Honor selections in no particular order are... Unspoken: A Story From the Underground Railroad by Henry Cole, Spirit Seeker: John Coltrane's Musical Journey by Gary Golio and Rudy Gutierrez, Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington by Jabari Asim and Bryan Collier (Artist)

Good luck to all the illustrators that are in the running! My personal favorites are "A Home for Bird" by Philip C. Stead and "Each Kindness" by Jacqueline Woodson illustrated by E.B. Lewis, "This is Not my Hat by Jon Klassen, "Green" by Laura Vaccaro Seeger and "Unspoken" mentioned above.

Ed Congratulations to everyone that voted on the 2013 Mock Caldecott. The Caldecott Medal and Honor books chosen by the committee all finished in the top 25 of our voting, and 4 of the 6 were in our top 10. Pretty good in my opinion. Like most people, my choices were very different from the committee, but I applaud their choices. They are all great books, and this was another year of incredible picture books to choose from. Thanks everyone for voting.
