DCPL 's Teen Love & Sex (Some Romance) Booklist, for OWL

YA books about Love & Sex. Started with one of 14 award-winning Booklists for Teens, created by librarians at DC Public Library in Washington, DC--with some additions by elissa and other voters. The focus of this list is to be comprehensive, from a mostly liberal point of view.

elissa The first 22 were on the original list, and then I added 20 more, most of which were published more recently than DCPL's booklist.

message 2: by elissa (last edited Apr 17, 2009 10:16AM) (new)

elissa Lots more books have been added by other voters. Although I do like it, I'm not really sure that Pride and Prejudice belongs on this list! Dedication is an adult novel, but it sounds like it has some teen appeal.

message 3: by elissa (last edited Oct 09, 2009 06:29AM) (new)

elissa I first added this list to GR for a sex ed class that I teach at church (OWL). It's a very comprehensive but extremely liberal class, so very conservative books about love and sex don't fit.

αςΗΓεϒ♥♪ so these booka have sex in them?

message 5: by elissa (last edited Jan 02, 2010 05:04AM) (new)

elissa This list says it's books about LOVE and sex (and some romance), so not all of them have sex, but many of them do. Some of the non-fiction ones are about sex. Does that answer your question, Ashley?

αςΗΓεϒ♥♪ yess it does thank youu!!
vause it says sex up there so i was like some of these dont have it so i got confusedd.

thankk youu!! :)

message 7: by elissa (new)

elissa You're welcome. :)

message 8: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Twilight? No sex in there, and its not love. Its a creepy stalker relationship.

αςΗΓεϒ♥♪ Jenn{OuR lAdY pEaCe LuVa!!!} wrote: "Twilight? No sex in there, and its not love. Its a creepy stalker relationship."

hahaha

message 10: by elissa (new)

elissa TWILIGHT would fall in the "some romance" part of this list. It's definitely not one of my favorites, either, but lots of people love the romance of it. "Creepy stalker relationship" is one opinion, but not the only one!

message 11: by Jenn (new)

Jenn True, true, but really? Im a teen, and while I recognize a creepy, controlling relationship, many other girls I know dont. Should we really be defining things like that as 'love'?

message 12: by elissa (new)

elissa My point, Jenn, is that some people don't see it as a "creepy stalker relationship", including some adults. I'm not sure I'd go quite that far myself. There are some people that just see it as romantic, and while I don't completely agree I'm willing to acknowledge it as a valid point of view. It's not MY definition, but its inclusion on this list just acknowledges, rather than defines. Does that makes sense?

message 13: by elissa (last edited Feb 26, 2010 08:27AM) (new)

elissa I have no idea why somebody put MOCKINGJAY on this list when it's not even out until August!! I don't think it'll fit here, anyway. Even though there's some romance in that series, it's definitely not the focus! I think we should take HUNGER GAMES and CATCHING FIRE off of here, too (even though I'm completely and utterly in love with this trilogy myself), but a lot of people seem to be voting for them here. I'd really like to keep this list under 100 books if possible, please, so can we keep it to a minimum with the fantasy/SF additions? Thanks!!

message 14: by Rachelkathleen (new)

Rachelkathleen Shiver? x

message 15: by elissa (new)

elissa I haven't read Shiver, but I'd really like to keep this list focused on books ABOUT love & sex, as much as possible. From what I know of Shiver, I don't think that's the focus of the book. I put Twilight on the list because it's a popular romance, but now I wish I hadn't!!

Emilyandherlittlepinknotes Have you read "Diary of a kiss" by Sarra Manning? It's quite old and it's a trilogy that focuses on love & sex
After so many years it's still my favourite ya romantic series. Oh and what about Megan McCafferty? "Second Helpings" can fit perfectly here.

message 17: by elissa (new)

elissa I've never read "Diary of a Crush". Both books look like good additions to this list. Feel free to add them in, Emily. :)

Emilyandherlittlepinknotes done, Sarra Manning is a british writer (used to have a column on a newspaper)I realize she is not as popular outside Britain, she is great and I never get tired of recommending her books

message 19: by elissa (new)

elissa Thanks for the recommendation, Emily! I just put a hold on French Kiss (we have all 3 in my library system, but not at my branch), and I'm looking forward to reading it.

April*procrastinator and proud* Jenn{WeEzEr LuVa!!!!} wrote: "True, true, but really? Im a teen, and while I recognize a creepy, controlling relationship, many other girls I know dont. Should we really be defining things like that as 'love'?"

I agree with you completely.

message 21: by elissa (new)

elissa OK, ladies. We can't "define" love for anybody else, we can only describe our own experience of it. Love is an individual thing, and every person experiences it differently, just like many things. What's "right" for one person certainly may not be "right" for another.

message 22: by Laura (new)

Laura Are there any novels you'd like removed from the list?

message 23: by elissa (new)

elissa I do think that it's too long, and that it's a little too heavy on the paranormal romance, but I'm OK with it the way it is. If there's something I REALLY thought was out of place, I'd remove it myself. At least I thought that all GR librarians could still remove books from lists, as long as you heed the dire warning. :)

message 24: by Esther (new)

Esther Jenn{InCuBuS lUvA!!} wrote: "Twilight? No sex in there, and its not love. Its a creepy stalker relationship."

hahahah! good one![:

message 25: by Jenn (new)

Jenn elissa wrote: "OK, ladies. We can't "define" love for anybody else, we can only describe our own experience of it. Love is an individual thing, and every person experiences it differently, just like many things..."

Ok, true, you cannot define it for other people. But really? Really? Someone breaking into your home to stare at you while you sleep, that's not creepy? That's not stalker? Someone telling you who you can and cant be friends with, where you can and cant go, that's not controlling?

Dont get me wrong, Im not saying teens shouldnt be allowed to read it for these reasons (For many other reasons, such as the terrible writing), however, I dont really think we should say that these types of behaviors are okay and romantic. It will just breed more stupid teen girls that cant figure out what's okay and what's not.

message 26: by elissa (new)

elissa As I've said before in these comments, I'm not a fan of Twilight myself, BUT even many adult women find them romantic. It's not just teenagers reading them. I try not to judge other people's tastes, just as I don't want my own judged.

message 27: by Via (new)

Via Love Jenn{OuR lAdY pEaCe LuVa!!} wrote: "Twilight? No sex in there, and its not love. Its a creepy stalker relationship."Yeah, there's sex in Breaking Dawn, but not Twilight.

message 28: by elissa (new)

elissa Many women consider Twilight a romance. I don't myself, but its inclusion on this list is an acknowledgment of that opinion. Not all of the books on this list have sex. Some are just about love and/or romance.

message 29: by ♫♫RiTA♫♫ (new)

♫♫RiTA♫♫ great list..........

message 30: by elissa (new)

elissa thanks, RiTA!

message 31: by elissa (new)

elissa In the interest of keeping the list a manageable length, I'd love to keep any more paranormal romance off of the list, and concentrate on realistic fiction (about love between people). That's not a comment of whether paranormal romance is "good" or not, just a comment on the focus of this list. Like I said in an earlier comment, I put Twlight on the list shortly after it came out, because it was a popular romance. Now I wish that I hadn't opened that can of worms with this particular list, because I think it's more useful to keep the length of the list shorter than it is now, and the intention of this list is not to be comprehensive in terms of YA romance.

elissa wrote: "In the interest of keeping the list a manageable length, I'd love to keep any more paranormal romance off of the list, and concentrate on realistic fiction (about love between people). That's not ..."

I didn't add anything like I usually do on lists. I am glad you have Twilight as its the best.

message 33: by elissa (new)

elissa Thanks for not adding more paranormal fiction, Alice! :)

IMO the guy in Perfect Chemistry is promiscuous and so NOT a good idea for a role model. He has definitely been sleeping around altho Brittany is a virgin. Is there a double standard here?

message 36: by Jack (new)

Jack Hi everyone,

I have created a new group called Goodreads All Sorts and I'd love for people to join it or just even just give it a look. It's a group that discusses anything and everything. There will be monthly group reads, movies, and music. There is a folder for everything you could think of. I'd really like if people could spread the word because I'd love for the group to be a success. Here is the link to the group:

http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/9...

Thanks very much,
Jack :-)

message 38: by elissa (new)

elissa People have added all sorts of adult books to this list, unfortunately. :(

message 39: by inga (new)

inga Ffs, Fifty Shades of Grey is decidedly NOT a YA book. Someone edit the list please?

message 40: by elissa (new)

elissa I took it off. Hopefully it won't be added again...

message 41: by inga (new)

inga Thanks! ;)

message 43: by RAM (new)

RAM you should try the v girl . it's all about love and sex from the perspective of an 18 year old girl and it's quite good.

try also a book called firsts. it's about a teen girl helping guys to have their first time because hers was cathastrophic.

message 44: by elissa (new)

elissa On the last 2 pages of this list, there are lots of authors advertising their own books. I wish that authors would not add their own books to lists. Let your readers add them if they want to!
