Jan Hey Thom.
Northern Europe only? Or Europe entirely? From the list I see that Protohistory is all right as well. Can you confirm this?

And for the fiction stuff, if it's researched, but that research is dated by now, is that ok as well?

message 2: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn What I am looking for is the kind of speculative, reconstructive history that you have in Robert Harris's "Pompeii". I got most frustrated reading Stuart Piggott's Ancient Europe: many maps with many dots on them representing post-holes, inhumations, weapons caches, and so on with little in the way of integration. Have come to believe that "Without fiction there is no story". Then again, I draw the line at Jean Auel...unless there are pictures of Darrell Hannah in animal skins. Ha ha. Better was the implied argument in Golding's The Inheritors. For now, let's put everything on the shelf for later contemplation.

Jan I was actually thinking about The Inheritors. I am writing my thesis on this exact subject, although focussed on the Paleolithicum only.

The irony is that Jean Auels book are actually pretty well researched, she's just not a real good author alas (I still don't hesitate to recommend the first book though.)

I'll see what I can add :)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found is terrific, but a bit later than you want, I think.

message 5: by Jan (new)

Jan Technically everything about Celts, Vikings and Gauls isn't prehistory (that's the protohistory I was referring to), but they might fall under the speculative, reconstructive history Thom is looking for.

Thom Dunn Jan wrote: "Technically everything about Celts, Vikings and Gauls isn't prehistory (that's the protohistory I was referring to), but they might fall under the speculative, reconstructive history Thom is lookin..."

protohistory--I like that. It's a new word for me.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads It's a useful term.

message 8: by Thom (new)

Thom Dunn I like the newer histories that read like novels with all the documentation in an appendix keyed in to applicable lines of text. Different forms are covered by the term "historical novel". Maybe after all, I just want what I ain't got and can't have.

message 9: by Beth (new)

Beth This is my favorite history "genre".
