Julia These books are not set in the Wars of the Roses, so they don't belong on this list: Death Comes to Pemberley, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Pure White and Deadly, The Paris Wife, Jane Eyre, Schindler's List, and Wuthering Heights.

Lobstergirl Got them.

message 3: by Misfit (new)

Misfit Wondering about My Lord John by Heyer. Isn't that an earlier period?

message 4: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Jul 27, 2013 08:35PM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads I think that one is about one of Henry V's half-brothers, so probably.

message 5: by Julia (new)

Julia The Kingmaker's Daughter at #33 and #65 appear to be the same book. Is there a way to combine duplicates?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads That should have gotten it.

Dawn Susanna - Censored by GoodReads wrote: "I think that one is about one of Henry V's half-brothers, so probably."

Checked his dates--he died in 1435, so outside the designated range.

So are Anya Seton's Katherine, the other 2 books on Katherine Swynford, Costain's Three Edwards, Within the Hollow Crown, and probably Crown in Candlelight (as much I like that book). Oh, and a book called 1415: Henry V's Year of Glory also doesn't quite fit.

message 8: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I see some non-fiction titles on this list, which is titled "historical fiction". That would indicate novels only?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Removed: The Royal Kidnapping, which from the blurb has a modern setting.

Looks like someone has been spamming the lists. Historical fiction it's not.

Ivana This list is called "Historical Fiction: Wars of the Roses", but there's a whole bunch of non-fiction books in it.

message 12: by Dawn (new)

Dawn These are not tales of the War of the Roses:
The Conquering Family (1066-1216; is it even fiction?)
The Three Edwards (Edward I, II, III; don't think this is fiction, either)
The Black Rose (1200s)
Daughter of Time (modern setting discussing Richard III and the missing princes)
My Lord John (ends before 1435)

Non-Fiction:
The Making of the Tudor Dynasty
The Perfect Prince
Royal Blood (Bertram Fields)
Letters of the Queens of England
Year of Three Kings
Kings & Queens of England: The Lives and Reigns of the Monarchs of England
And there's a lot more on the second page.

There's plenty more on the first page as well. In addition to those above, non-fiction books on the first page I've noticed are:

The Princess in the Tower
The Wars of the Roses
Elizabeth of York
Mistress of Monarchy: The Life of Katherine Swynford
(all by Alison Weir)

The Women of Cousins' War - Philippa Gregory, David Baldwin and Michael Jones
(yes, Gregory is a fiction writer, but this is her non-fiction book)

The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings Who Made England - Dan Jones
The Wars of the Roses - Dan Jones

The Woodvilles: The Wars of the Roses and England's Most Infamous family - Susan Higginbottom (another writer who writes both fiction and non-fiction)

Blood Sisters: The Women Behind the Wars of the Roses - Sarah Gristwood

The Plantagenets - Derek Wilson

Winter King: Henry VII and the Dawn of Tudor England - Thomas Penn

Elizabeth of York: The Forgotten Tudor Queen - Amy Licence

Richard III: England's Black Legend - Desmond Seward
The Last White Rose - Desmond Seward

The Last Days of Richard III - John Ashdown-Hill

Elizabeth Woodville: The Mother of the Princes in the Tower - David Baldwin

Bosworth: The Birth of the Tudors - Chris Skidmore

Katherine Swynford: The History of a Medieval Mistress - Jeanette Lucraft

Granted, some of these, such as all books by Weir and Licence, take so many liberties with the facts, especially when their authors write as if they have a direct mental link to the people who lived 500 years ago and know exactly how they felt, that they may as well be considered fiction... But technically, they're still considered non-fiction.

ETA: Non-fiction books on the second page, in addition to those mentioned in the previous post:

Anne Neville - Michael Hicks

The Tower of London - Peter Hammond (this is a guidebook!)

The Life and Times of Richard III - Anthony Cheetham

Richard III - David Baldwin

Four Gothic Kings - Elizabeth Hallam

Blood & Roses: the Paston Family in the Fifteenth Century - Helen Castor

The Three Richards - Nigel Saul

Margaret of York: The Diabolical Duchess - Christine Weightman

1415: Henry V's Year of Glory - Ian Mortimer (not only is it non-fiction but also is not about the Wars of the Roses)

The Wars of the Roses - Desmond Seward

Richard the Third - Paul Murray Kendall

Bosworth 1485: Psychology of a Battle - Michael Jones

Stoke Field - David Baldwin

The Kingmaker's Sisters - David Baldwin

Richard III - Michael Hicks

Margaret Beaufort - Elizabeth Norton

Elizabeth of York - Nancy Lenz Harvey

Elizabeth Wydeville: The Slandered Queen - Arlene Naylor Okerlund

There's almost as many non-fiction books on this list as there are fiction books. It's as if most people didn't read the title at all.

message 14: by Misfit (new)

Misfit That's a lot of non-fiction books. I wish the list creator would pop in and clarify, the title is clear - historical fiction - but the description isn't quite as clear. Historical books I think it says?

message 16: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen This list is a hot mess.

message 17: by Misfit (new)

Misfit I am thinking we turn it over to the librarian group? GR is so serious about removing books.

message 18: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen Can't the list creator edit the list as they see fit? I understand how this would be a problem if the list creator is no longer active on GR. I've never made a list so I'm not sure how they work.

Misfit Gretchen wrote: "Can't the list creator edit the list as they see fit? I understand how this would be a problem if the list creator is no longer active on GR. I've never made a list so I'm not sure how they work."

I think the list creator can edit their list, but not 100% positive. I just know that when editing a list as a librarian, there's a real serious warning from GR saying how serious they are about removing books if they actually do 'fit' the list in question. I've learned to clarify any lists I start like this and state non fiction not allowed.

What is Katherine doing on this list?

message 20: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen I had the same thought regarding Katherine and then I noticed according to the comments above, it has actually been removed once. Just because her descendants were partially responsible does not make the book appropriate for this list.

I agree. That's one I'm comfortable removing.

Edit, also removed Mistress of the Monarchy: The Life of Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster
